Merging Google Contacts on Droid X

I have my Verizon phone contacts and my Gmail and Google Voice contacts all appearing on my Droid X in various forms.

How do I merge them - there are over 300 and I would like to NOT have to do this manually!!

Also, once they are completely merged, is the Back Up Assistant sufficient to keep them from getting lost permanently in the event that something happens to my phone?

There has been issues with Backup Assistant not working lately. Still not sure if it fixed though. I use Gmail to sync my contacts and back them by exporting to a vcf file on my sd card and through the app Lookout.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Backup Assistant isn't perfect. I had to do a factory reset and went to Backup Assistant to retrieve all my stuff. Gave me about 1/3 of all my contacts and just a few of my apps back. My suggestion, and this is what I am doing. Just like with a computer, I'm backing up all my important stuff. I'm tethering my Droid to my laptop, setting up a new folder I call Droid, and copying all the stuff I want from the SD card into this folder. I tried it by putting in a clean SD card and pulling all the stuff from the folder into the card. Worked great.

Keep in mind Backup Assistant will only backup "Phone" contacts, not Google contacts. Check how each contact is linked on your phone to see which type of contact it is. Backup Assistant will protect all your phone contacts in case your device is stolen, so make sure you activate! It is free and easy so it makes sense to at least activate the service.

Seems like nobody answered your question about linking. The only way I know how to link is go to the contact you wish to link. Tap the menu key and you will see two items...link contact and unlink contact. I'm afraid that there is no way to link a block of contacts such as all the FB contacts in one sweeping blow.

I got this from HappyJackDaddy in a later reply.  It solved my problem

Seems to me that there are "Phone Contacts" and "Google" contacts.  If you open up a contact on your phone, tap on Linked Profiles and you'll see whether the contact is a Google contact, a Phone Contact, or both.   The contacts that you enter on your phone itself are both.  The contacts that you enter online while in your Gmail account are Google contacts only.  If you want all your contacts to be backed up to both Google and Backup Assistant, they have to either all be entered manually on your phone or they have to have gotten to your phone in the first place from Backup Assistant.    That's because Backup Assistant only backs up Phone contacts, and Google only backs up Google contacts.  If a contact is both, it'll be backed up in both places.   Sounds like your contacts are backed up at Google because that's where you entered them (or imported them to)  in the first place.  My advice, if you want them to also be in Backup Assistant, would be to export a CSV file from Gmail and then import that file into Backup Assistant.  At least I think you should be able to do that.  Hopefully that won't double your contacts!  I had the opposite problem.  When I got the Droid X I had all contacts from my old phone on BA and they were pulled down to my Droid X, and I wondered why they wouldn't sync and show up on their own in Gmail.  I finally exported a CSV from BA and imported it to Google.  I was worried it would double my contacts, but it didn't.  Worked great, so I'm thinking it should work fine in the opposite direction too.
