Message Notifications, can you customize?

I'm aware that you can assign custom ringtones to your contacts, but are you able to assign notification tones for when the SMS or MMS message you? It would come in handy to have different "tones" per contact so you know who is messaging you without looking at your device.
My previous phones have allowed me to do this, but I'm still learning the Droid system!

It is not possible to have notification tones for each contact in the stock message (sms/mms) application on Android phones. From what I understand, alternative messaging application will allow this. Handcent is one that I have heard of. I like the stock message application so I haven't tried different ones.

I use handcent for sms not the stock sms app. Handcent is awesome, you can customize each person through the app for different tones, ect...
