Thanks Verizon Wireless community for all of your responses!
We have identified the root cause of the software issue on the Samsung Charge causing the mobile hotspot to close. Great news! A software update is now available and will be pushed over the air daily. You will get notification that an update is available on your device.

The hotspot doesn't work on any Charge.... I just got my Charge last night as a replacement for my Thunderbolt and was very disappointed to find the hotspot did work. I called tech support and went in to a store to confirm that floor models and employee Charges are all inop. So don't reset or replace your Charge it's going to fail on all of them.

No it is real. I had it up and running. Went and changed the date to get it from the carrier and the hotspot closed.

Hello GreenRobot,
I do apologize for the delayed response. I would like to thank our community members for assisting. I'm glad to hear the workaround worked for you as a temporary solution. As of today June 9, 2011 Samsung has released a software update to download to the Charge device to assist with the mobile hotspot issue. The update will go out in stages and you should be expecting the update as early as today or over the next few days. The promotion for the hotspot at no additional charge will continue until June 15, 2011 and on June 16 a message will be sent to you to advise to subscribe to the paid feature. For more information on the update please visit http://support.vzw.com/system_update/charge.html
Thank you again for your patience.

I take it if we are taking advantage of this free mobile hotspot trial offer, when the trial is over, we will NOT be automatically be enrolled in this extra add-on, correct? I do not plan on continuing to use it after the trial is over, so I want to make sure that the paid feature is not automatically subscribed to without my consent.

changing the date messes up all of the sync features... Verizon is aware of the issue with the Charge and has a "critical" status on the issue(what ever that means) I have found that my "Elixir" app widget works quite well for toggling on and off the hotspot feature on my Charge. the only drawback is that I cannot yet select my own passphrase. If you choose to go this route, the security phrase to access your hotspot will be your 10 digit mobile #

Change your date to set the passowrd and settings and then put it back once you have it setup.
Then go and use the elixir app widget after that.

I did Elixir, it works thropugh that widget.
Amazing that Verizon would have been so lame to shut off the entire product.

I dig the Elixir widget work around, way better than changing the date.

Actually, setting the date back one month worked for me too. That's pretty surprising, but thanks tons for the answer that they couldn't provide. Now just to make sure that they don't "update" my phone again without me knowing to correct your temporary fix!

WOW! I just changed the date to May and Boom hotspot works. Is that a joke? VZWsupport wrote me on twitter saying their top engineers have it listed as an open issue still.... I'm not a programer or developer by any means but you would think that if the hotspot works fine with the date changed wouldn't overriding or rewriting that part of the software be fairly easy for a big company like Verizon????

Well hotspot will work if you set the date back but for some reason it interferes with Google account syncing. I guess I'll try setting it forward a month.

I think since Verizon is (was?) providing free data plan they had programmed it to stop working on June 1 (which is when the plan was supposed to stop being free). So if you change the date to something beyond June 1 I'll bet it will continue to have the problem. This is probably how they can cut you off service if you don't pay your data plan bill.... they reach out and change your software.
Just guessing...... but it is strange that they haven't fixed a problem that simple yet.

You can use the date trick to open the Mobile Hotspot app to set the settings and then switch it back to the current date. Then you can launch the mobile hotspot with an Elixir widget.

I like that, but I'm new to droid stuff. Can you explain what steps I need to take in order to do what you said? I don't know what an elixer widget is......
Thanks.
