The differences are easy motorola has a full qwerty keyboard, & unless your husband really knows how to use touch screen only thats the choice I would make. They both have 5MP camera but the Moto has a flash, Eris does not. The the apps are all from the same source & there are 10,000 of them. The motorola comes with a 16g memory & the Eris has a 8g memory card. Until christmas there is a sale hopefully it also applies to your area buy either MOTO or ERis get a Eris for free (you should get yourself an eris, too.

I hope you all can help me out. I'm looking to buy my husband a droid type phone for Christmas, but a lot of the talk of specs & apps are over my head. He will mainly be using the phone for surfing the internet/email, calendar appointments, and the GPS/navigation function. It looks like the Droid will be $199 and the ERIS will be $99. The $100 savings would be nice, but it's not all about money. Can you all give me any advice on which phone to get him? Which is better overall? Easier to use? (Again, most of the jargon is over my head - so layman's terms would help!) This will be his first smart phone. Also.. I assume the data plan includes regular text messaging.. is this correct? Thanks so much for any advice you can give!
If he needs navigation, then it's the Motorola Droid. The HTC Droid (as of now) does not have turn by turn navigation. However, it is rumored that it will get the 2.1 update sometime in the first quarter of next year and will have the navigation at that time. I have the Moto Droid and love it, but alot of people swear by their HTC.
My opinions on comparing the two phones:
HTC Droid (Eris):
- + better interface "out of the box"
- + more aesthetic appearance
- + "pinch zoom" on default browser
- + lighter
- + trackball
- - small screen When compared to the Moto 3.2" vs 3.7"
- - older, slower processor
- - no physical keyboard (could be a positive to others)
- - seems to be some major issues since the maintenance update
- - no flash on camera
Moto Droid:
- + Excellent screen both in size and resolution
- + voice activated turn by turn navigation (awesome)
- + newer , faster processor, very responsive (fast)
- + pinch zoom available with Dolphin browser (free download in the Market)
- + physical keyboard (could be a negative to others)
- + feels solid
- + LED flash on camera
- + 16gb SD card compared to the Eris with 8gb
- - kinda heavy, but not too bad
- - no trackball, directional pad without extending keyboard
- - not the most beautiful device, very utilitarian, that works for me, some people maybe not

Thanks!
I think I'll go with the Motorola. We do have the BOGO right now, but I don't know if I can bring myself to pay $60 extra a month for both of us to have the data packages. It would be neat to have internet, but don't think I'll use it enough to get $360 worth out of it in a year.
Thanks again for your responses.

The HTC Droid Eris is a great phone. I've had no problems with the update whatsoever and encourage everyone to install it because it increases your battery performance exponentially. But the Moto Droid is more popular so you are probably better off getting that. Don't forget that your husband has 30 days (from the date of purchase) to return it if he does not like it.

Personally I would go with the Motorola Droid phone instead. With a full out keyboard, typing should be much easier to do. Typing on an only touch screen phone can be hard. It does take some getting used to (coming from experience).
