Motorola Droid (original model) and Wifi: cuts out connectivity to internet

Hi - this is my first post to the board, and I hope I do not violate some sort of taboo. But here goes. I have had a Motorola Droid for 18 months now. It has worked well but only ok in the last 6-8 months. Recently, it developed wifi - itis. If I turn on the wifi and connect (like right at home) I get great reception on network (from bar display) but if I try to browse, the only thing it does is browse - returns the web page not available message (even for Google!). I want to use wifi when I can at home especially since I think the county sheriff's office put in a new radio tower that clamps cell phones because my on-air connection has dropped to one bar or less (and mostly not 3G and not even 1X).

Has anyone had a problem with wifi -even when connected cause I checked with my router and it sees my device and I can ping it with good (26ms) response - where nothing on the phone trying to get to the outside world works if wifi is turned on. I turn it off and it all works - but at the snails pace of my home reception. BTW Verizon...can you fix that reception in my home location?

You are definitely not violating any taboos and we appreciate your inquiry. Have you been able to connect to any other wifi hotspots since this has happened? I see some other people have suggested changing security settings. Have you tried this? I would suggest trying different wifi connections, including open connections to see if you are able to browse. If it is not working for any, I would suggest a master reset.

For your reception issue, is this just occurring inside your house, or the whole area? I will need more information to troubleshoot that issue. Can you send me a PM with your name, 10 digit mobile number and how long this has been going on? Also, if your home address is different than your billing address, please provide that info also.

Sounds like a problem with your router. I don't think you are getting an IP address from your router, probably due to some sort of security setting on your router.

That other guy is wrong. You are getting an IP from your wireless access point. It is most likely a problem with your phone. I have a similar issue with my Droid X. Some people have reported that using wireless-G instead of wireless-N, or not using AES as solutions. Those options didn't work for me, and I don't consider them acceptable solutions, but you may want to try it if you need to get wifi working.

Thanks for your reply. You are right. My phone does have an IP assigned by the router. And I can ping the phone from my PC when the wireless is running. It just does not talk across the internet and there are not any filters, rules, or other obstacles set up in the router to block access to the internet. Every other device I have, that if it connects to the router, goes to the cloud - including my TV, the DVD player, laptops, printers even!. So does anyone know of the problem in the Android 2.2.2 where it gets confused and doesn't know which path to take - wifi or Verizon network? It use to work just fine. Just last couple months has it gone south on the wifi stuff.

No its not a problem with the router. I can see the Droid when I look into my router. I can ping the Droid from my PC when I have it on wifi...the Droid just doesn't talk across the wifi connection. Its like it get confused about which network to us - wifi or Verizon. Any ideas?

I have never had a problem accessing the internet via Verizon or WIFI at home or anywhere else. I have a CradlePoint N router and my Droid connects automatically as soon as I arrive home and stays connected unless I turn off the WIFI. Then, it automatically connects via Verizon 3G. I am running 2.2.2
