If you have a Gmail account, once you sign in on the Droid X to your account, it should automatically download your contact onto your Droid.
DOs: Take your time learning the Droid. There is a learning curve and it takes a little while. I also recommend going to the Motorola site and downloading the manual. The help apps also has a manual in it. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
Don't. try getting all the apps because some apps will conflict with other apps and cause all sorts of problems.

Congrats ... you're going to love it .... It really is a great phone and will be a small learning curve. Echoing others - don't be in a rush to start downloading APPS .. just spend a day or 2 learning the ins and outs of the device. Read the Manual (online or download the PDF). There is an APP pre-installed for HELP ... read through that after you boot up your phone. Make sure to CHARGE your phone immediately after taking it out of the box ... I know, it's tough ... you'll want to start playing with it.
Before your phone arrives, log into your Google account and get your Contacts all established the way you really want them. (The phone's email apps doesn't do "groups" ... so don't spend a lot of time arranging them). Like MORTB mentioned, the first thing you'll be doing after booting it up is logging into your Google account from your phone ... it will immediately transfer all the contacts. You'll then want to set up your preferred email APP ... I happen to use the YAHOO one; but there are several out there. Personally, I would just start with the stock apps until they aren't doing something you wish -- and then download what you prefer.
Enjoy .... Feel free to ask questions - we're all here to help.

Yes, there have been tons of app issues as of late. But if you keep track of your apps and when problems pop up, you should be able to narrow them down and locate the problem app through process of elimination.
I have found that official apps on the VZW tab of the Marketplace are pretty solid. I haven't had a single issue with any that I have used.
