How are you trying to charge your phone? Are you trying to charge through the USB port of your computer? If you are, hook the cable to the AC adapter that came with your Doid X.
Your X should charge while it is on. When you connect to your computer, if your USB port is not newer, then it might not have enough power to charge up the phone while it is on.
I never turn my X off. I use the AC Adapter most of the time, and only hook up to my computer when I want to transfer files.
If you X does not charge with the AC Adapter, then there could be a problem with the cable or the X. I would replace the cable before replacing the X.

Thank you. I was getting very frustrated and kept plugging it in to the computer (newer MacBook) and wall sockets to no avail. Maybe the connections weren't tight or something. It is now working. I was hoping it was OK to keep it on most of time. If I have any more problems with the power cord, I will take it back. I just got Droid on Tuesday and LOVE IT and we're leaving on a trip this Wednesday, so I gotta have power!

I would also invest in a car charger for the X. I have a couple (one for each car) and if you want to use the X as a GPS, then I would also invest in the car dock. That way you can have the X held in an easy position to read while driving, and you will need external power to use the GPS (it will drain the battery if you run just off the battery power). I havee both and it works out well. I move the car dock from one car to another with ease.
Understand got to have power.....
Enjoy
