Need help with DLNA please!

I am trying to set up DLNA. I have the network settings done and I am connected to it and can see my computer from the phone. However I cannot browse files. I get an error message "Browsing of folders failed" and I believe that I need to have some sort of DLNA software on my computer. Is this correct, and, if so, what software do I need? I am running Windows 7 x64.

Thanks!

Just need to download latest version of Windows Media Player which added support for DLNA.

Once installed ... do this

Turn On Media Sharing

If media sharing is not already turned on, you need to turn it on.

To turn on media sharing

  1. Click the arrow below the Library tab, and then click Media Sharing.
  2. In the Media Sharing dialog box, select the Share my media check box.

Hi these instructions seem to be for WMP 11 and I have WMP 12. It's a bit different on 12. However I found some links online and now I can use my PC to play music on my Droid X. However the Droid X does not seem to see the PC. It just sits there when looking for Media Servers but never finds one. And that is the most important thing as the reason I am doing this is so I can move files between the Droid X and my PC wirelessly and I can't do it now. So I am not sure what to do next!

Thanks

OK I GOT THE DROID X TO SEE THE PC when I go through the DLNA app itself instead of Media Share.  I was hoping to get the phone to show up in Windows 7 as a drive wirelessly but it does not seem to do that. How can I connect wirelessly to my PC and have the Droid X show up as a drive?

Thank you!

OK I seem to have gotten the phone to see the computer. It easily connected to my video and my pictures folders and I could move files.  I am waiting for it to scan my music folder which is very large. It's taking a long time. Hopefully it does not have to do this every time.

Now the wireless connection to my PC two feet away keeps droping and the phone locks up. Does this DNLA stuff actually work???  I think I'll stay with USB, I have to plug a cable in but at least it works flawlessly.

For what it's worth, I'm able to play videos and view pictures on the DroidX via XBMC (freeware) on WinXP Pro.

I'm starting to think this is more of a Windows issue rather than a Droid issue; I'll be plunking around with several DLNA clients for Linux tonight.

It seems like it might be a Windows issue to me too. Whatever the reason, I cannot access my large Music folder on the phone via DLNA. It will access my Pictures or Videos folders that are very small. But it's mostly music that I am concerned with so that's a problem! I'm going to try another client besides WMP and see what happens.

Question - if I ever get DLNA set up to work, does that mean I can play music on my computer remotely from my phone anywhere I go (as long as the computer is on)? And if so would I need to have the Media Server open too?
