You won't be able to do a direct exchange and, because you didn't buy the phone yourself, you probably won't even be able to exchange it and pay the difference plus restocking fee, unless you have your friend do it (and I'm not sure what the time frame is to be able to do that.) Verizon does have a buyback program : https://www.trade-in.vzw.com/ but, when I ran it, they were only offering $72 for the D2, and you would have to sign a new 2 year contract to get the best price on the D2G which is $199.99. Unless, of course you could find it cheaper at Best Buy, Amazon, EBay, or somewhere similar.

You probably, more than likely, run into all sorts of hassle. Truthfully, I wouldn't even bother. If you do want a Droid 2 Global, I would search the net for the best price. There are a few Internet Cell phone stores, including Amazon, Wirefly (my favorite), and several more.

The other advice here is good, but I just wanted to check why you need the SIM facility. If it is to use an AT&T or T-mobile SIM in the US (or indeed any SIM in the US) this will not work. D2G blocks GSM carriers in the US (but works fine outside the US)
Also, to put any SIM in (to use abroad) you will need to get the phone unlocked, which can be a problem if you are not a Verizon customer.
