North/South reversed in Google Maps, Google Sky, and Google Earth

templetonryecy

"I've found three reports of this problem, which seems to affect my Inc 2. When using Google Maps, the compass (based on the magnetometer) reverses N/S. Interestingly enough, E/W is correct. If I move around enough, such that Maps can determine my orientation using velocity-based GPS, then the problem is fixed (until I sit still for long enough, and the magnetometer takes over again).

The magnetometer itself seems OK. For example, the app "Compass" detects N correctly.

Two others have reported this problem, which I also found on the demo unit in my local corporate store. The problem also seems to affect Google Earth and Sky."

This issue is being report in several support forums across the net. It's an important issue that HTC needs to address because it directly affects Navigation in a negative way, an important feature many have come to rely on.

Verizon support - are you able to escalate/report this to HTC and push for them to include a fix in their next software release?

Thanks!

I sure can escalate this.  There is not currently a known issue logged for this one though, so I need some information to get this submitted to our product issues team.

Can people reading this thread that are having issues exactly as originally posted please send me the following via PM so I can get this escalated?  Please do not reply in the forum

1) Device ID (located under settings> about phone> phone identity).

2) PRL (located under settings> about phone> software information).

3) Build Number and Baseband (located under settings> about phone> software information).

4) Hardware Version (located under settings> about phone> hardware).

The more devices affected, the quicker I can get this issue escalated.  Once I get this information, I will reply to your PM with a confirmation that your device info has been logged.  More responses = faster escalation = faster resolution.

Thanks for the help on this one!

I have the same problem:

1) I don't see "Device ID" under phone identity. I have Model number, IMEI, IMEI SV, Device serial number, SIM Card ID, MEID, Phone number, and IMSI. Which of these do you need?

2) PRL: 52297

3) Build Number: 1.34.605.4 CL341571 release-keys. Baseband: 20.23W.30.0803U_0.99.01.0225_2.

4) Hardware Version: 0001

Hi Rob, our apologies. The device id would be MEID (your phone's unique serial number). Be sure to send Mike a message directly with the needed info about your phone by clicking the MikeS_VZW link, then Send the user a private message on the right side of the page.

Thanks

I noticed in the Places app that the arrows point in the opposite direction from the correct location.

I have the same problem.  When I go to GPS essentials compass it is off by about 180 degrees North and South, closer east and west.  I have selected calibrate and the help screen is pretty useless to understand.  Could it be a problem with the gps essentials app that is causing the problem.  Also do you have to have gps essentials installed to get gps on google maps?  Just got the droid and having learning curve from iphone.Mod number is ADR6350

Thanks

I also have the same problem with Google Sky even though the compass app correctly identifies north. It seems to be a universal problem for the Inc 2, as there are discussions across numerous droid forums about this issue.

Please advise on fix.

Same thing with my 2-day old, right out of the box DInc2!!!

However, I'm also hearing reports of the same thing in other makes/models.  Moto DX was one of them.

Thanks to everyone for the PMs with their device information.  I succesfully confirmed that this is a known issue that has been escalated to HTC. HTC is working on a software release to remedy this.  While there is no timeframe for this, it has gone all the way to the product team at HTC, and it will be fixed.

Software pushes are usually done over-the-air, and they generally address multiple issues.  Here's the site where there will be a link that says "Software Update" when it becomes available.

Thanks for helping get this issue escalated. We appreciate everyone contributing to make HTC aware of this issue.

Well, I sure hope you all are hungry because a tasty treat will be cooked up shortly on your devices: Gingerbread.  This should resolve the issues with North/South being reversed on the handsets.  It may require an uninstall/re-install if it doesn't work correctly immediately following the software update.

Here's a link to read.  It includes the software update instructions, and benefits of doing the software update.  This update notification will be pushed to phones.  Once your phone is processed in the batch, you can check it manually afterwards.

Thanks for your patience regarding this.  Historically, it has taken 1 week+ to update everyone.

Mmmm, is this really about to happen?   There was a similar document for the Droid 2 Global, with support telling callers it was being released in batches, only to discover that the update was delayed due to bugs, and it is still not out for that device.  Now I know that was a Motorola release, and this is HTC, so things may be different.  But can you confirm that this is really about to be released for the Incredible 2!

Yes.  I work our Twitter account too, and I have seen multiple users who have already received the push notification.  Gingerbread for this one is good to go so far.  The Droid 2 Global is still scheduled to be launched.  We updated shortly after our mistaken announcement that it's delayed but still coming.

Yes, this is happening.  I just checked for firmware update and 2.3.3 was downloaded and installed.

The issue is now FIXED on my Incr. 2!!

I have the same problem on my Droid Incredible 2, but unlike the others, it also affects my compas app.  As I rotate the phone it changes which direction is north, if I rotate it often enough eventually north is correct on the compass, but as soon as you move again, it is off again.  The issue with Google sky seems as the others have reported, 180 degrees off.  How can I check to see if I have the firmware update others have reported has fixed this?
