AOL Email seems to give a lot of their customers grief, at least on the Droid X. My question is, do you have the correct settings?
Here is what they should be.
Incoming Server imap.aol.com
Incoming Port 143
Use secure server no
Verify certification yes
Outgoing Server smtp.aol.com
Outgoing Port 587
Use secure server yes
Verify certification yes
To get to your email account, tap on the apps "my account". Next tap on the AOL account. Here you will see the setup for both incoming and outgoing servers.

For "notification" tap on your email icon-open the menu-tap on notification and make sure that it is checked off. If not, you have to give it the little green checkmark.
Personally, I prefer the "Messaging" icon over the Email icon. The messaging icon gives you all your non-gmail email information. The email icon gives you only the default one and you have to have an icon for each Email server. I only have two, plus Gmail, but if you have several, as some people do, it can get confusing.
