Over charging (with home or auto charger)?

This may sound dumb...if so please indulge me. Is it possible to over charge your incredible by always leaving it in the charger, whether its fully charged or not, and cause the charging cord to fray or melt (home charger or auto)?

I went to the Verizon store today to complain about how often I have to change chargers since I've been with Verizon (over 10 years), from phone to phone.  When they looked at my current auto charger I presented, they noticed it looked to be partially melted.  Logically, I went home and reluctantly checked my fuses in my car...none are blown (I have a 2008 vehicle so I didn't suspect a blown fuse).  So now I thought about the common denominator and that is...my charging habits may be poor.  I come home and immediately plug in my phone (without paying attention to the batter life).  When I leave the house and get into to car, the phone goes on the auto charger.  The point, the phone is only off the charger when I am away from my car or house.

Could my charging habits be ruining my charger's life prematurely?  I purchased a new charger but am making this inquiry before connecting it....

It's a bad idea to have your phone on any charger on a continuous basis. Yes, it will make your battery really hot, and I imagine hot enough to melt cord. I suggest that you plug your phone onto a charger when it is down to 20-30 percent and unhook it when it becomes completely charged. Some people will charge their phone at night when they are sleeping, personally, I think that's a poor idea.

Don't know that I agree. I leave mine on the media dock all night, every night. Been doing it since I got my D1 in february.
I've not had any such problems, but the droids manage charging better than some phones.

Thanks for the response.  I wonder if the charging docking station has a different capability of output to the phone once the phone is fully charged, opposed to the regular charger?  Yeah, I'm going to modify my charging habits based on needs Jason and see if I notice any changes in longevity of my chargers.  Thanks
