Phone discharging while plugged in at night, battery dead in the morning

I'm using the OEM charger and OEM battery that came with my phone, and I charge it at night everynight. I also use the phone as my alarm clock, and have done so since I bought it over 2 months ago. Suddenly this week it has discharged overnight while being plugged in. This happened twice. I plugged it in and went to bed, leaving the desk clock on (with the night mode activated). The charging light was on and I used the phone while plugged in for a few minutes, and I made sure the charging icon was displayed on the battery icon. This morning I fortunately woke up before my alarm was supposed to sound, however the phone was completely dead. Orange charging light was flashing, still plugged in, but wouldn't do anything at all. I had to do a battery pull and plug it back in, charge for a couple of minutes, and then it would finally come back on. When it did, it showed the battery was at 1%. It is now charging normally, back up to 18% after about 40 minutes of charging, and hasn't frozen again.

The first night this happened, I did not have an alarm set at all. The second night, I did have an alarm set with Alarm Clock Plus app.

I know there is a pending software update, however it hasn't been pushed to my phone yet, and when I try to have the phone search for an update, it shows the update is there but gives me an error message when I try to download it. From what I understand, I just have to wait until Verizon decides to push the update to my phone, is that correct?

Thanks.

Have you had abnormally hot weather this week? If the phone gets too hot it stops charging...

I'd not use the desk clock mode IMO.

ChristinaB_VZW ,

The update defined in your response does not address Cwguth's issue.

I agree with Jax, if the orange light is flashing, your battery overheated. I use to have that problem a lot if my screen was constantly on and the phone was plugged in. The phone shuts off when the battery gets to a certain temperature and won't charge until it cools off again. I'd download the battery widget from HTC and check the temperature periodically. It'll tell you what condition the battery is in and if it's overheated or not.

As for the alarm clock thing, I would just turn the screen off. Even on a low power setting, the screen heats up a considerable amount if you leave it on.
