Phone recognizing that charger is present but battery will not charge

I have had the droid since January 2011, the first one had the power port fail. It would not recognize the connected power source. The replacement I received in August of 2011 did not include a replacement battery, is now recognizing the power source attached but it is not charging.  About 2 days ago (4/16/12) I noticed the back of the unit got very very hot but the charging issue didn't start until last evening (4/18/2012) Did the battery go bad?

I had the same problem with my dinc2.  They had to send a replacement phone out each time.  My phone got so hot at one point I couldn't even hold it.  It happened to twice.  Every time they claim that the next upgrade will fix it.
