Phone shows no bars, but connects instantly to 3G data services?

Up in the sticks of Wisconsin's Northwoods, used to get 3-5 bars with ATT.  Switched to Verizon and used to get 3-4 bars, now nothing and spotty/dropping calles.  YET, after turning on 3G data service, still no bars - but outSTANDING 3G data?  How can this be?  And how do I fix the no bars/dropped calls issues?  Coverage there is supposed to be primo, according to the Verizon map. How do I actually get that coverage - like I used to?

YYouYNow, I can understand the need to have your service working. I checked for outages in your area and was unable to locate any. If you are still experiencing issues with your service, send me a private message with your mobile number and name. I will contact you to assist you with resolving this issue.

I have the same problem here in IL.

In my area, we are on the extended network, it basically sucks.

Anywhere I go that has full 3G network, I don't have any problems.

Here, not having a reliable signal drains my battery

I have emailed a couple of times to get full 3G network here in my area with no replies back.

I live 5 miles from a Alltel tower which by the way, Verizon owns Alltel.
