Phone storage space is getting low - NO it's not.

I have twice now rec'd this message, first time I took it in and they showed me to clear cache, I uninstalled some apps. but now 2 weeks later I'm getting the message, I have 1.84 total space and 1.78 available on the SD card, 6.46 total and 5.64 available internal. 748mb total and 527 available total memeory. Went to my local verizon store again yesterday. They advised a factory reset...What?? Is there any other solution?

And second question, how do I do this and not lose my contacts, are they stored on the SD?

Go to people, menu, import/export, save to sd card. As for a hard reset, I am just ignoring the notice and somewhat patiently waiting for a fix from HTC soon!

wipe the cache partition (his will not delete your data or apps):

Boot into recovery

1. Press and hold Power, Choose "Restart" option
2. When screen turns off, press and hold Volume Down and Power
When the white HBOOT screen appears, use the volume button to move down to “RECOVERY.”
Press the Power button to select “RECOVERY.”
When the Green Arrows and\or triangle and exclamation appears, hold the Volume Up and Power button at the same time.
Using the volume button, scroll down to “Wipe cache partition” and select it (power button).
Select "Reboot system now"

Now you have enough space to download and install the additional update. Verizon released 2 updates for the HTC Incredible, I'm guessing you only got one. Go to Settings> About Phone> Software> Build - 4.06 right? there is a 4.08 that (allegedly) resolves this Low on Space problem.

To get that update immediately (recommend connecting to WiFi for the download):

Go to Settings> Date\Time> Uncheck Automatic and manually set your clock ahead 1 month
Then go to Settings> About Phone> System Updates and it should be there waiting for you.
follow the prompts, it'll take about 10 minutes.

The best way to avoid this issue is to check on apps that use up a lot of "data" storage when you look at the application details under Manage Applications. Go to Menu->Settings->Applications->Manage Applications. Then tap any application to see how much app storage, data storage and cache storage your app is using.

If you primarily sync with google contacts or exchange contacts, or have phone contacts and use verizon backup assistant, then you should check out the size of your Contacts Storage. Over time this can grow a lot, and if you "clear data" on it, it will rebuild itself and the size will be much smaller. HOWEVER remember, DONT do clear storage on contacts storage if you use phone contacts and have not backed up your contacts.

Also look at Google Maps, HTC Gallery App, HTC Mail App, Market App. For all of these the Cache has a potential to grow a lot. So clearing these helps.

Also try and see if there are any bookmarks that you can delete in the Browser. Clearing Browser cache and history will also help.

i keep getting the PHONE STORAGE LOW/LOW ON SPACE message as well.

my cache is CONSTANTLY cleared.

my internet browser cache is CONSTANTLY cleared.

i am not low- and did not get this message prior to getting the latest update.

now, no matter what i do on my phone, it won't go away.

since the latest, last, update- my battery life has improved tons (thank god).... but this is the one issue i can't get to clear, or fix, or go away completely.

okay... i had 4.06 and i did what you said- set the clock ahead one month and went into settings and it is now updating my software to the 4.08.605.2 !!! cool!

i'm baaack! lol.. i got the update to download, but it refuses to install. battery level is fine, it just gets stuck on the waiting to install screen and never fully does. i've tried to restart the phone, but when i check the software, it's back on 4.06 even though it's tried to install the 4.08 three times now.

i just can't get it to really install it.

I am having the same issue.

I peformed the procedure to clear the cache, and the 4.08 update downloaded.

When it rebooted to install it, it failed saying there is not enough space to install the update.

WHat do you suggest?

I have plenty of room on the internal storage, and SD card. I do have the icon saying low on space.

I had the same problem drove me nuts , I did extensive research n ill tell u don't waste ur time clearing data in ur apps . The only fix is to make sure ur contacts r backed up n do a factory reset u will not loose pix after u do factory reset it will download new update n no more low phone space message , getting ur contacts back r simple go to accounts sync n sync ur backup it loads all ur previous contacts , then go to market n it will have all ur old apps , took me 10 min to do all this n well worth it cuss I tried everything else , best thing I don't have to buy a new phone

I've been dealing with the "low storage space" issue for a few months now. Like many of you, I've been hesitant to do the hard reset because I don't really see how that would fix the problem. Seems like a reset would clear everything, but the phone would still be vulnerable to the same issue some time down the road.

For quite a while, I've been dealing with the issue by uninstalling updates to apps like Facebook, Gmail, GMaps, Adobe Flash, and Amazon mp3. Doing so does get rid of the low storage message on my phone, but of course then I'm constantly bombarded with the message telling me to update my apps. Not to mention that I am stuck using outdated versions of some of the most used apps on my phone! This is definitely not a perfect solution so I returned to the blogs for another approach.

Oh, I should say that I'm stuck on the 4.06 build. I periodically get prompted to install some updates (presumably build 4.08) but it never actually goes through the reset process. I click install and nothing happens! Nice huh?

So I just ran through the process described earlier in this thread of rebooting, going through recovery, clearing cache, and rebooting again. This process did NOT remove the low storage message on my phone. Shortly after the reboot, I got the install updates message. This time, clicking on the message took me through some install process and rebooted the phone. But, once I got back to the home screen it told me I didn't have enough memory!! ARG!!! So now I'm back to square one. I've uninstalled updates to my main apps to clear the low storage space warning and am waiting for the install updates message again. If I don't get it, I'll try going through the hard clear cache steps and try again. Love Verizon. Love the flexibility of Android. But the serious lack of tech support is pushing me towards the iPhone. Hate to say it! But problems like this shouldn't happen for so long on phones that cost this much.

I've also tried the above recovery steps but found that in order for the update to install I first had to clear the data for Facebook through manage applications. After clearing the data I performed the reovery steps and then the 4.08 update installed. Yeah!

So I have gotten it to reboot, however, it says I do not have enough space for the 4.08 update?

I have deleted one app to make room for the 8.6 MB file and still can not get it to install correctly. It just stays on the "Rebooting Now ..." Screen. I have tried the change the date trick 4 times and I continue to have the same freeze up issue once it counts down to reboot.

Any more tricks? I am getting tired of having so many simple issues with a phone I paid so much for.

I have had this message of phone storage low for quite a while now too. I deleted a lot of texts recently and that stopped the storage message for a while. I also deleted my adobe files (open the internet > menu > more > downloads, and you can select and delete from there). That helped for a while as well.

For the past week I've had the low storage message & the phone said it was preventing me from downloading the 4.08 update. So, I did the same recovery steps outlined above and but the message continued.

As mentioned, I had to clear data through Settings > Applications > Manage Applications. I picked facebook, twitter, and some others I thought may have a lot. Then I went through the recovery steps. Once the phone restarted I didn't get a chance to get to the step of advancing the date one month. The system was already prompting me to install the update. My phone then froze at the restart. I opened the back, took out the battery, then put it back in. I restarted the phone and seem to be all set now with the new 4.08 update. I am so thankful for the help from these posts!

I have been having this issue for a few months now. I have gone to the store for a hard reset and it worked for a week then the message came back. I deleted all of my apps and pictures and it worked for a week then the message came back. So I have been constantly deleting texts, history, forcing close apps and restarting my phone just to receive texts. My emails are no longer connected to my phone, my Google map freezes up and my phone just shuts down whenever it wants to. I have had the phone for a year and a half so it is out of warranty, but there is good news if you are like me and for some reason did not sign up for insurance. Verizon is having open enrollment for their equipment protection plan until April 30th 2012, and there isn't a waiting period. I just signed up because otherwise I wouldn't be able to afford a new smartphone right now. I wanted to share the news in case anyone is like me. Hope it helps!

Wow--I didn't think you could grab the insurance if you didn't sign up within 30 days of getting your new phone...

The Droid Incredible is eligible! I just called and signed up. Normally you cannot sign up after 30 days but they are running a special.

So you are saying if we have INSURANCE on the phone, we can get a different phone? (i don't want another incredible -that isn't so incredible) I pay for insurance monthly anyway. I just did the hard reset and tried to back up all my photos, messages, contacts etc. Having issues getting the phone set back up with my email and FINDING all my stuff again. This is not the first time. I'm tired of this low on space error. AND I wasn't getting any texts or emails because it said I was low on space. BUT - couldn't find where I was. SICK of uninstalling things, erasing, getting rid of stuff every other day. It's all on my SD card anyway. I don't understand and it's TOTALLY FRUSTRATING. Can you explain what this special is - what kind of deal did you get on the new phone? Thanks

beware the insurance route. I purchased insurance on my daughters motorola razr. When she broke her phone getting a replacement cost me an additional $90 and she was sent a referb that died in less than six months. I'll never purchase insurance on another cel phone again.

I have the 4.08 already installed. I followed your instructions for clearing the cache... but, I still have the error. Now, I can't even look at my text messages.

Apparently, the partition held over for Data used by apps to keep from being 'laggy' is kept in two places data and data/data. I don't believe we - as in those with non-rooted phones- have direct access to delete files in those directories. It is the unfortunate reality that many apps - GMail, Facebook, Twitter, and Netflix included - save massive libraries to those directories which makes that 170MB - yes, ONLY 170 - fill up VERY fast. So even though we have a total of 8GB on the phone that piddly cache of 170MB can hose us in no time. >Rooting comment deleted< but so far the amount of control I have over what is on the phone and where it resides is head and shoulders above what I could do before. Erasing the caches only does so much. If you have your email through GMail or can sync it to a gmail account so you can use their service I highly recommend it. It is a great way to back up both personal and business emails in one place and IF you have to delete the data for the app it does not remove your account information because upon setup it became native to the phone;). Don't use the stock email app if you can help it. Once I did that I stopped having so many problems with low storage space issues. That lasted for about 6 months and then it seemed every few days I would have to clear caches, delete data, roll back app updates (because I couldn't delete these data hogging apps). >Rooting comment deleted< It was quite an ordeal because I had to roll back the phone to Froyo before >Rooting comment deleted< It is working great so far and with the added benefit of better reception in my house and the speaker which I thought was garbage actually works now. I cleared the data for the Mail app and it seemed to work. However, it required me to reset my mail account settings (which don't work with the default settings (need to change outbound SMTP server and PORT.

look at your text messages and call history. For some reason this phone seperates storage space for these things. Forgot where I found this fix or I would point you there. However, if you delete all the outdated txts and calls, the memory message goes away.

Here it is Oct.7th and my DINC just congratulated me for installing the 4.08 update. Like many of you, I have spent countless hours deleting apps, caches, messages, histories, blah frickety blah. Also a lot of rebooting because the camera froze up, along with a few other oddities. After the update, the low space notification went away, the camera works, and the phone seems to be operating as it should. I was tempted to root the phone out of pure frustration over the past year, but resisted because I stubbornly believed that a solution could be found without having to do so. I searched all the forums for possible solutions but only stumbled on this one recently. Funny because I've been a member of Verizon Community for a couple of years now. Ya think I would've spotted this earlier. Anyhow, all seems to be good for now, and I would urge all who don't have the 4.08 update to get it. I'll definitely post back if I encounter any problems in the future.
