Is it possible to play downloaded music from the Droid X in the auxillary jack of the car stereo similar to an ipod? If so, where can you purchase the connecting cords for the car auxillary jack?

Sure it can, just like plugging in an iPod to the aux jack.
Working for a million-dollar sound and lighting company, I tend to make my own cables for that, but I'm pretty certain those cables can be bought at Radio Shack (if you get past the toys), Best Buy (if you can get past the screaming TV systems), Wal-Mart (if you can get past the shopping cart full of screamin' young'uns), or any other department store where electronics are sold (good luck on finding a REAL electronics store any more. The last one just shut its doors a week ago. Grrr).
Try a car stereo store, too. That's where all the REAL audio guys hang out...

Geri O is right. Just to give you an exact item to look for you need a 3.5mm male to male audio cable, also called a 3.5mm auxiliary cable.
here is one for 3.99 at Walmart
Note that this will play music through the head phone (3.5mm) jack, it will not charge your phone. If you would like to do that simultaneously get a micro USB car charger as well, it helps for long trips so you won't run the battery dead. I point this out because my friend had the same question and was wanting some iPod like dock cable that played music and charged his phone, I'm fairly certain only Ipods/iPhones have a one cable solution.
