My wife's Droid 4 just displayed a pop up window while she was connecting to the Today Show website. The pop up said that the site had infected her device with a virus, click here to repair. Sounds like a scam.

Yes those are scams. Clicking it will install a virus/malware. Unfortunately a lot of size don't bother checking to see who is advertising on them especially in mobile. I'm pretty sure NBC would not like it if they knew one of their advertisers was telling people their site was infecting people with a virus
