Prevent import of Gmail contacts

I have done a factory reset on my phone and am ready to start fresh. I have not signed in to my Google account because of a frustration I have with Gmail contacts syncing to my phone.
I absolutely do not want my Gmail contacts to be searchable in my phone contacts. I have no need to have the e-mail address of every single person who has sent me an e-mail or who I have e-mailed over the past 6 years that I have had Gmail.
Is there a way when I can set up my Google account on the phone that will prevent the phone from importing all my Gmail contacts?
Thanks for any help.

Yes go to your home screen and press the physical menu key. Select "settings", select "accounts & sync". Select your gmail account, uncheck the boxes you don't want or need, for you uncheck the "sync contacts" box. If you ever change your mind just recheck the box.
If you haven't added you gmail account yet then do so from "accounts & sync" with the "add account" button. Durring setup it will ask you what you wish to sync, uncheck/check what you do and don't want.
Cheers

Also, If you don't want random emails as contacts, and don't need them anymore, just go to your gmail account on your computer and click contacts in the left column and clean house. I did this recently just to get rid of random people I emailed once way back when.
One more thing, what I said above also works to go into facebook and other accounts to enable/disable contact and other types of sync. eg I dont want all of my "friends" on my address book, but I do want the neat pictures for my friends that are already in both places, hence I use sync existing.
Hope this helps
Cheers
