Problem with default gMail new mail notification

My Droidx using the required gMail account does not notify me when new email comes in. The taskbar on the top screen on my other android phones taskbar always had an icon envelope with a capital M , when the account had new mail. If you go to home screen->settings->accounts {edited for privacy} option opens a screen w/ Sync Contacts-Sync Gmail-Sync Calendar. Tapping Sync Gmail refeshes the mail inbox and only then taskbar on the top screen will display the icon envelope w/ capital M.

No push on the default required gMail acoount?

My other email account on the accounts{edited for privacy} works like it should. There is always icon envelope w/ capital M, if there is new email.

Any fixes?

Did you try tapping on the Gmail icon to open it up? Then tap on menu>more>settings. Scroll down to Notification settings. Is the Email notifications check checked off (lit) and is Notify once checked off (not lit)? If that is not the case, try activating the Email notifications and deactivating the Notify once.

We seem to be having the same difficulty - With a small hitch. Our family has 2 Droid X's. One happens to be on the family plan and had been set up by the local VZ store for us. The other unit is a Droid issued from my employer - This phone has a corporate e-mail sync to the unit and of course is attached to their mail server. Gmail is not part of the service they use whatso ever but that service works and notifies for each and every mail item ( both business and gmail ) without fail.

The family unit only has the gmail account and texting - Text notification works like a champ but gmail is a dud unless you hit refresh - Hey VZ what's the story.....

After spending some more time tinkering through the droid and looking at the GMAIL application itself in the settings (main) area - Accounts - gmail account when highlighting there is no automatic sync checks ( its blank and will only sync when touched. Is this a problem with the install of the application or is there a reason there is no auto-sync attached to this account????

Try these steps:

Go to Settings, then Manage Applications, then all Applications, then scroll down to Gmail, select Gmail and choose to clear cache.

If the problem persist, there are applications like the Gmail Notifier Application on the Android Market Place that may allow more notification settings.

Thanks for the reply - But after getting nowhere I went to the local tech center - they had to perform brain surgery and rehabilitated the Droid X OS. Once complete all worked as it should - tech said they sometimes go a little loco.......

Sorry no fixes with your suggestions. No push notifications (M) on the task bar w/o interaction even with the programs on the marketplace. My Settings->Accounts has a MS live (hotmail) registered. The push works works, if there is MS live mail. The "M" is there w/o interaction. If I manually "Sync Gmail", then the "M" is there.

Resetting to factory would probably resolve it like the techie Verizon did for the other guy. Killing a flea with a sledgehammer method. At least I have a Titanium backup to help restore my hours of configuration.

I kludged a fix by forwarding gmail to hotmail from the web, a slimy solution at best. The push works.

Mortb's solution worked for me.

Open Gmail

hit Menu key

Settings

Email Notifications - check the box

If I uncheck the box, the email shows up in the Inbox but there is no M in the status bar.

OK I think I found a potential issue. If you don't minimize Gmail after you change the notification setting it doesn't work. I had to back out of Gmail (hit the back key) for it to work properly.

If you don't minimize and just change the setting notification will not fucntion. It functions with Gmail open after you minimize it once.

Gmail Sync Solution: Press and hold on an open screen to bring up the widgets menu > press "Android Widgets" > Scroll to, and open, "Power Control" > The "auto-sync" symbol (rotating arrows) should have a green bar below it (if it doesn't, that's the problem.) Light it up and enjoy your regularly syncing Gmail. (once the sync symbol is lit, you can drag the widget to the trash, the function WILL stay active.... Also make sure all the Gmail account setting are set up correctly 4 syncing.

As the originator of the thread, I tried all the other solutions, but YOUR suggestion WORKS!!. The control panel widget was on screen2. I must have disabled it to save power. What could an icon with rotating arrows mean? Duuh. Gmail pushing that icon right up there on the task bar. Thanks again.

To all the tech guys at Verizon shame on you. Their solution to blotto the OS and restart of course would work, but he solution is so simple. It reminds me of Windows tech support guys who are infamous for "reinstal" cure. Hey wad about all the stuff I put on there to make it my Windows. Love Android's support community and open source. The learning curve is not that bad considering what you could get out the Lean and Mean DroidX.

Me, I'm just an old hack, my OS level programming career ended after the introduction C++.

I also want to say thank you. This solution worked for me also. The verizon store had no clue and all other suggestions above didn't work either.

I'm so Glad it worked for you. Frankly, I struggled with the same problem right up until just a few days before I saw this thread and was excited to share the solution. It's amazing how simple the solution was, and that it was right here in front of us the whole time, yet no one, even the experts, could point it out.

Thanks for the info as well. Use hotmail primarily, and since forwarding it to gmail, the response time is about a minute since the email was sent. Now I get messages much faster that just using hotmail.
