Problem with my Droid 2

Hi,

I've been having trouble with my Droid 2 ever since getting it in November.  It periodically just shuts off for no apparant reason...tonight my dad called me on it and when i went to answer my phone, it just shut off.  It does that fairly often and then I always have a hard time getting it to turn back on.  Does anyone else have this problem?  It's like I have to hold down the power button for a really, really long time before I can get the phone to turn back on.  My husband also has a Droid 2 and he has the same problem.  I really like the phone, it's just a real pain to deal with sometimes.  Wishing I could swap it out for an Iphone or something.

If your experiencing issues with your phone powering off randomly, I recommend performing a soft reset on the phone and also checking to ensure the software is correct. The most current software system version for the Motorola Droid 2 is

Applications > Settings > About phone

If you need to update your phone software, you can use the steps below and you can also use the steps below to check for future updates.

Checking for system updates

  1. From the home screen, touch the applications tab (located at the bottom of the display).

  2. Touch Settings.

  3. Touch About phone.

  4. Touch System updates.

  5. If an update is available, touch Download.
Note If prompted Your device is up to date! No update necessary, touch OK.

  6. Allow the download to complete.
Note To monitor the download, touch Menu > Notifications from the home screen.

If your issue persist, please call our technical support team from an alternate phone at 1-800-922-0204 for trouble shooting.

What you are experiencing isn't an uncommon problem. I've had this happen a number of times as well. In most cases it is blamed on misbehaving 3rd party applications, but no one has proven that (at least to my satisfaction) and quite honestly I don't care. The OS should be capable of dealing with a misbehaving application better than shutting down.

You can of course try a factory reset. You should also manually power off your phone at least every couple days (the theory being if you do it manually it won't happen randomly as much, so the timing will be better).

I know I haven't been much help, but you aren't alone.

If this is happening to two different phones, as you indicated, I would certainly look at the apps that you have downloaded. A wayward apps can cause all sorts of misbehaviors on a cell phone such as continually shutting it off. If it were just one phone, I would say that you might have a faulty phone, but two separate phones? Look at the apps.
