ALL,

My question is, when the OFFICIAL Verizon OTA (Over The Air) version of Gingerbread comes out and I update my Samsung Charge Droid phone will it wipe out all my phones settings along with my music, videos, the APPs that I loaded, contacts, photos and so forth?

In other words, can it update to Gingerbread without affecting anything else except the phones operating system?

Jerry,

No, it should not do that. And yes, you should be able to update without affecting anything but the OS itself.

The update does not normally wipe system data when updating.  Now as for your Music, Video and Photos, if the device gets wipe those items are stored on your sd card and the update does not bother the sd card at all so they shouldn't be lost..  Also your apps are stored and can be restored through the Market.

Check out this app if you want to backup apps only (No settings)... http://community.vzw.com/t5/Android-Apps/Simple-way-to-Backup-apps-for-Hard-Reset/td-p/658707

Under some case wiping the device before doing the update to avoid compatibility issues but the is your decision if you decide to do this but its a good ideal in my opinion.

Thank you WCMack and Wildman.  I am interested because I have never updated a smart phone and did not know what to expect.

I probably will not rush to update.  I'll wait a couple weeks and see how it goes because as a card player might say, by the "luck of the draw," I got a perfect Charge phone where everything works.

Thanks again guys,

JerryF

Reading several forums other than this one, all signs point to a final 2.3.4 gingerbread release before the end of this month.  So far trying the leak from last week, they have fixed a lot of problems.

Does using the leaked version void your warranty?

Only official software from verizon is allowed to run on the phone without voiding the warranty

And what do you hope GB will add to your phone?

Being that it is samsung and the fasinate went from a great deice to retired after the 2.2 came out (nearly a year late) I wouldn't hold your breathe for this....
