RIng and Ringback tones on Droid X

I just left AT&T, after less than one week, and had been using a HTC Hero.  Now I have a Droid X and was disappointed to discover that I can't select a specific ringtone for someone - I had one assigned to my wife and another to our son and one for everyone else.  Motorola should fix that as it ought to be pretty simple.  Unless there is some way to do it that I haven't discovered yet.  Also, Verizon is happy to sell me ringback tones but it doesn't appear that the Droid X can use them?  I would really like to use "Yakety Yak" by the Coasters as my ringback tone.

You absolutely CAN have a dedicated ringtone to a contact. Go into  CONTACTS, click on the CONTACT you wish to assign the ringtone, and click on EDIT from the Menu. Scroll down to ADDITTIONAL INFORMATION and expand that section. Scroll down to select RINGTONE.

There are a lot of free ringtone APPS out there. No reason to pay for Ringtones. PS - if you have an MP3 on your phone, you can create a Ringtone from any part of the song as well..   RINGLERT is one of the free APPS out there that do both of these.

Thanks for the insight about ringtones.  Am I correct in assuming that ringback tones can't be used since that word isn't in the user manual?

Yes, you can use ringback tones.  It can be done through the Verizon website and your wireless account.  Hover over the "Entertainment & Apps" section at the top of this page and then click on the "ringback tones" under the Manage Media section.  I have a different ringback tone for every day of the week.  I believe you can have different ringback tones for different hours of the day if you like.

Thank you all for the information provided. Rinback Tones is a Verizon Wireless service and may not be found in your User's Manual. To enable Ringback Tones log on to My Verizon, select Features, add Ringback Tones, Accept Terms & Conditions, then click continue. The feature is $0.99 per month and this does not include the cost of the tones. To purchase the Ringback Tones, go to www.verizonwireless.com/rbt and select the Ringback Tone of your choice to purchase.

Follow the steps below to change your default Ringback Tone:

1.  Go to www.verizonwireless.com/rbt

2.  Sign in using your User ID and password that you created for “My Verizon”.

3.  All of your Ringback Tones will appear as icons.  Simply left-click the Ringtone you wish to be your default and drag it to the “My Default” category located on the right-hand side.

To assign the Ringback Tone to a specific number, follow the steps below:

In order to assign a Ringback Tone to a specific number, you will first need to add the number to your Ringback Tone Contact list.  To do so, please follow the steps below:

1.  After you have signed in using your “My Verizon” user id and password information, click on the link that reads “My Ringback Tones”.

2.  Click on the “Contacts” tab, located in the upper right-hand corner.

3.  Click on the “New Contact” tab and type the person’s name that the phone number belongs to in the field provided.

4.  Next, type their phone number, beginning with the area code, but without the number 1. (eg. 5551231234)

5.  Press the TAB key or the ENTER key.

6.  Click on the Ringback Tone icon that you want to assign to this caller, and drag it to their name.  (To remove it, simply click on the Ringback Tone icon on the Contact name and drag it back to the Ringback Tone section.  By doing so, will change the Ringback Tone to the Default tone that you currently have in place.)

Can you use different ringtones as your text messages for each contact?  I just bought this phone and it will be here on Wed.

You can't with the stock Android messaging app (and I can't believe that they have't address that in subsequent Android updates, but oh well..)

However, there are a number of messaging apps in the Android app market that will allow you to select individual text messaging tones. Hancent and Go Messaging are two that come to mind. And frankly, these 2 apps are sooo much better than the stock messaging app in every way. And best of all, they are free.

And yes, it is VERY EASY to select individual ringtones for contacts.

So any third party would work? I have Rings Extend. I downloaded an app from the Market and got a virus. The rings extend works well.
