Reboots and SD card corruption

I bought this phone about 3 weeks ago. It continually reboots. Every time I use the camera, it freezes and will not reset or hardboot or anything. I have to remove the battery to get the camera and / or camcorder to unfreeze. Now it says that the SD card is corrupted. So I can't even open camera or gallery....when I try it gives an error and forces close. My husband got his at the same time and has zero trouble.

sorry to hear that - have had my DX since November and right before the August upgrade patch, my original SD card corrupted too. Had to buy a new one on my own as VZW will NOT replace your SD card for you, even though they should (that's another story). My replacement SD card has faulted twice since I bought it in mid-August so it appears the phone may be causing the card to have problems, as there are multiple posts online (here and elsewhere) about cards corrupting and otherwise going bad or suddenly blank. VZW 'says' they are looking into it, but I don't know if I can believe that as far as I can throw it.....unfortunately the GB update apparently caused problems that have still not been fixed, and contrary to what alot of people here may tell you, the problem is NOT with installed apps....it is with the OS as I have done multiple factory resets without any success.

angiemae1, having SD card issues and camera issues are no fun because I use my camera almost everyday and my SD card is saves my info, so I understand your frustration. I was unable to find this as a known issue but found customers may have device functionality issues because of software not being updated or corrupt apps. I first recommend putting phone into safe mode which temporarily disables all applications that have been installed via the Android Market. Performing this step is necessary to determine whether a 3rd party application is the cause of an Operating System / Application issue. I secondly will recommend checking if SD card is mounted correctly and you have the most up to date software. The last option would be be a factory reset. Performing a factory reset will remove ALL data including the Google account, system data, application data, application settings, and downloaded applications. Only perform this step if necessary.

I have listed a link to view and receive steps for the software update below. I have also listed steps to put phone in safe mode and perform the factory reset, which is last option.

Steps below to put phone in safe mode:

Press and hold the Power button.
Select Power off.
Press and hold the Power button.
When the Motorola Logo appears on the screen, press and hold the Menu button.
Hold the Menu button until Safe mode appears in the lower-left of the home screen. This may take up to 30 seconds.

To Disable safe mode:

Press and hold the Power button.
Select Power off.

Steps below to perform factory reset: Remember this should only be performed if you have tried all other options

From a home screen, select App menu (located in the lower right).
Select Settings.
If the application icon is missing, select App menu filter (located at the top) then select All apps.
Select Privacy.
Select Factory Data Reset.
Select Reset Phone.
If presented, enter the current passcode or draw the unlock pattern.
Select Erase Everything.

Keiffers you are dead on. It has never been the apps. It has always been motorolas version of googles gingerbread operating system. For those of you who went out and upgraded to the bionic which is also running gingerbread. Install the same apps you run on ur X. Does it crash? Does it reboot? Does it freeze? I bet it doesn't.
There will be no fix other than the one for the keyboard. Verizon demanded the fix for the keyboard because it caused problems with testing. That's a concern for Verizon. As long as it can make and receive calls and text like it should then Verizon couldn't care about the rest. This phone was released over a year ago and it performed so much better and had more functions than it does today. The only options to fix the mistakes are another cpo phone or pony up the dough and buy another phone.

Sorry, but I have to respectfully disagree ... I can only share my own experiences with my now 1 year old DX ... it has been rock solid, even with the latest OS updates - except for the automatic power back up issue that GB introduced ... which for ME, is more of an annoyance that I will live with. Every issue that I've encountered has been related to a rogue app I installed. Yea, some of them took some serious & lenghtly trouble shooting, coupled with the frustration of encountering the issue to begin with. I recently took a 2 week trip to Costa Rica. I had my entire itinterary on the phone, was taking a ton of pics with it, and videos, listening to music, using Cached Maps for getting around, watched full length (2 hour) movies on the plane ... just rock solid the entire time. I took several 9 hour car trips over the last couple of months .. again, checking email, making phone calls, Maps & Navigation on full time, Gas Buddy, snapping pics, browing the internet, streaming music ... ROCK SOLID the entire trip(s).

So yes, YMMV ... and sad to hear that (you) SOME people are having ongoing issues with the phone ... I've always been a big fan of doing the following in this order when such issues occur ... (1) SAFE MODE, (2) WIPE CACHE, and finally (3) FACTORY RESET w/o reloading APPS. Short of that, I guess it's just time to get something that suits your requirements.

If it was as you said, wouldn't ALL Droid X/X2's be unusable hunks of plastic? Not to mention the other models of Moto phones VZW and others carry?

I don't know enough to say you are wrong, but my experience tells me it is an Android problem, largely caused by app conflicts. I don't like Blur, don't get me wrong.

As for the OP, some apps write to the SD card. Who's to say that an inexperienced code writer, or an intentionally malicious one(s) could be filling the Market with apps that are corrupting phones and causing issues?

My phone was wrecked after GB, even after a reset, SD card format and cache clearing. The only thing I did was install fresh apps and check the Market every day for updates.

And you know what? As apps have updated (presumably as the developers addressed and resolved issues brought up to them) almost all of the issues post-GB have disappeared.

If it was an inherently "bad Blur", what made the issues go away.

Just to be clear. This is not an argument. Either way, whoever is "right", something needs changing.

Android is an open system, very similar to Linex for PCs. This means that anyone can write a program for the Android market, even if they do not know what they are doing. Corrupt programs, programs with trojan horses/viruses, etc. can be sold in the market. In short, apps can and do foul up both the cell phone and the SD card. This is the biggest problem with open systems. Also, this is why a lot of people prefer the Iphone (I'm not one). It is a closed system and the Iphone only has apps developed by their own people.

Yes I know that Android is an open system.....and I don't just put any old app on my phone like most people do. I work for a major computer company and in my time here I see people complain left and right their system doesn't work blah blah blah....only to find out they went to some website where they found a piece of software they wanted cause they 'thought it was cute' or a game that they thought would be 'cool' to play only to have their system crap out.

I have a total of 5 apps on my phone that it didn't come with and they are apps that have been on their since I first got the phone last year. Worked fine before the GB push and then the phone went to crap.....sorry but I do not believe it is the apps that are causing my problems. I'm smarter than that....

keiffers, I know folks with Android phones across several OEM's and service providers and none tell me their phones are bug and glitch free. I can't think of an iphone user that will at least admit they have issues.

My experience with this phone has me convinced that whether it's the skin the phone manufacturerer puts on top of the O.S., apps, or whatever, Android has a ways to go.

We can all hypothesize till the cows come home. I would buy another Android,, but doubtful that it will be from Moto.

I have had my phone in both states. with a factory OS and one that voided my warranty. I can honestly state that my phone performs 1000% better with its warranty voided than before it was. On motoblur app performance was unpredictable but without motoblur i can use an iphone slogan... It just works.

I understand why people would first think the problem with thier phone might be the upgrade of the operating system to GB, because that's the only thing they changed and now the phone is having issues. They don't want to think it my be an app, again because the ONLY thing they changed was the upgrade to GB.

Here's a little analogy that might help explain. Now I'm not saying that apps are 100% of the time the problem but, this will help you understand why they could be.

Let's say you bought a GM car. The engine, (let's call it the operating system because it's what makes the car run) is a 6 cylinder. The peripherals that make the engine work, (better/like you want it to) are things like the carburator, the exhaust, the distributor, etc. and we'll call them apps. Now, you put the best 6 cylinder distributor (app) on the engine that money can buy, and your car runs great. So far so good. Next, GM comes along and says we're going to upgrade your engine (nee operating system) to a V8, because this will make your can run better and faster. So you put the upgraded engine in your car and whoa, now it's hard to start and runs rough etc. Has to be the engine right, that's the only thing that has changed and your car was working great befor the change, right?

Wait, maybe it's that app (distributor) that you installed earlier? Could it be that the developer of the distributor needs to upgrade his "app" to include the possibility of an 8 cylinder engine?

Ok, maybe this isn't a perfect analogy, but you do see my point about just because the only thing that was changed was the engine and that doesn't necessarily mean that the problems you have now can only be the engine because that's the only thing you have changed?

Obviously I'm not trying to say that the GB update is perfect because that's just not possible, we're all human after all. I'm just saying that even though the only thing that changed was the upgrade to GB, please be open minded to the possibility that the problem could lie elseware.
