Receiving Garbled Text Messages on Droid

I'm having a recurring issue with my Droid: if I receive a text message over 160 characters I get it as a garbled mess, like this: http://yfrog.com/0idsc01100copyp
I know the droid can receive long messages with no problems because I write my friend what seems like short novels and he receives them just fine. But anyone, regardless of phone or carrier, who sends me a message over 160 characters results in that mess of characters.
I have spoken with tech support several times on this; each time I get a different answer but never a solution. Folks at the store told me that it's because I'm Alltel legacy, and that my data profile needed to be rebuilt to Verizon's standards by someone in tier 3 tech support (and they said they did.)
The latest reply from tech support was simply, "it will be addressed in the next update." but that answer is beyond unacceptable to me since I know that the Droid can receieve long messages no problem.
Is anyone else having a similar problem? Better yet, has anyone found a way to resolve it other than telling your friends to send your shorter messages?

You may need to check on the maximum message size setting for your SMS and MMS messages. To do so on the All messages screen, press MENU and then tap Settings to set the text or multimedia message options. Set the maximum file size for a SMS message. A SMS message will not be sent out or received correctly if it exceeds the file size set here.
