Ringtones vs. alerts

It seems that in setting alerts for incoming messages, such as text messages, the list of available sounds does not include any ringtone/mp3 files I have installed.  However for phone call notifications (ringing) I see the mp3s I have added to the phone among the list.  I'd like to use some of my mp3s for alerts, Is this possible?

I'm doing it.

I created folders on my SD card called media - audio - notifications.

I read that somewhere, not sure the whole path is really necessary though.
