Saving texts

Is there a way to save text messages? I am about to swap out a phone and would like to save them if I can.

There is a number of backup apps for SMS...  Check at https://market.android.com/search?q=sms+backup+and+restore&so=1&c=apps

i forward them to mysef as an email, losing some of the header but i know who they're from.

I think the OP wants to restore the data after they replace the device....

Ann154 seems to like SMS Backup and she reports it allows to save as txt format, wouldnt something like that be good for your situation?

SMS Backup and Restore from Ritesh Sahu is the one I prefer. My Tbolt currently had restored sms messages from both the Droid Eris and the HTC Aria on it plus the messages received by the Tbolt.
