Screen Issue . . . and not the "common" one

I've had the Droid X for about three weeks now, and so far I generally love it.  It's certainly a substantial step up from my previous HTC Eris.

However, two days ago a screen problem cropped up--namely the screen just suddenly went blank.  There was a slight backlight glow, but no images whatsoever.  It took several battery pulls to resolve and finally did so.

Since then the problem has cropped up a few times--once after placing a phone call, once after trying to "wake" the phone after I'd charged it all night (so battery level isn't the issue), and once in the middle of sending a text message, (and again just now - when I tried to waked it to confirm what my settings were - it was plugged into my computer's USB charger).  It's always resolved after 1 or two battery pulls, but with the increased frequency (and up to this point, lack of any obvious causation/correlation), I'm getting a bit frustrated, and hate the idea of having to pull my battery multiple times a day just to get the phone to cooporate.  Moreover, since I'm not sure what's causing this, I'm loathe to go to a Verizon store, since it's solved with a battery pull and not easily reproducible.

Googling Droid X Screen Issues has only led me to posts related to the flickering after a software update, not this particular problem, so I figured I'd ask whether anyone else has had this problem and what the solution is.

My brightness is set to automatic.

I don't have any battery managers (beyond the stock - which is set to "nighttime saver") or task killers installed.

I have it set to go to a lock screen with a number code.

System Version is 2.3.340.MB810.Verizon.en.US

Android Version is 2.2.1

Happy to answer any other questions, and  I'm more than willing to acknowledge that I may be doing something wrong--as I'm sort of flummoxed given that it's a recent (past few days) problem, but I've not done anything differently in those few days from when I got the phone as few weeks ago (beyond generally *use* it) to have led to this.

How reproduceable is this? That is, after a battery pull and things are running fine, how long does it take to crop up again?  If it happens fairly shortly, have you tried running in SAFE MODE for a period of time to try to rule out 3rd party apps?

Up to this point it seems to be happening at random as far as I can tell.  I've not tried safe mode yet, but will give it a try.

Presuming this *isn't* reproduceable in safe mode, would it be a matter of then uninstalling each of my apps until I'm able to find the culprit, or is there a more efficient way to find the issue?

If the problem goes away in SAFE MODE, yes, I would just start uninstalling recently-installed APPS one at a time and running for a while in between each uninstall. (e.g., don't uninstall 5-10 all at once, or you won't know which one was the culprit).

If the problem remains in SAFE MODE, it might be time to (gulp), do the FACTORY RESET procedure just to take it back to the original out-of-the-box software. But make sure you don't have the option to automatically reinstall the APPS or you might just be back to the same problem.  (Settings / Privacy / Automatic restore  -- make sure it is OFF).

Good luck.

Had the same issue, eventually half of my screen went dead where I couldn't see anything and then it went completely dead. Had to get a replacement.

I have this same issue randomly as well. It looks like the backlight of the screen is on, but the screen is black. The keys at the bottom light up as well. Very weird. I've found it only does this when I try to wake it up sometimes, and the only thing that fixes it is powering it off and then back on. So far I've never had to do a battery pull to fix it, though.

Yes - exactly.  The bottom keys are also lit.  Stupid n00b question, is there a way to power off if you can't see the screen (i.e., when I long press the power button, to get the options, I wouldn't know which one I'm selecting--that's why I do the battery pull)?

If you just long press the power button, it will turn off eventually. Mine does anyway - that's how I turn it off when this screen issue happens. It reboots eventually.

it sounds like you have a app that is hanging the device on wake up... I would try uninstalling recent installed apps and see if this resolves issue.
