Service in Alaska....

I'm in Anchorage on business for the first time in decades, and I can't believe it, but my Droid X continually shows that it is "Searching for Service". The Store Locator does not show any Verizon stores in Alaska, but the service map shows good digital coverage.

Do I have some sort of Roaming turned off, and how do I turn it back on and/or get this phone to connect to the network? BTW, the phone does connect to my hotel's wi-fi, but that only gets me to the internet....not to the phone network.

Thanks in advance.

There is no native Verizon coverage in Alaska. The cellular coverage for Verizon phones is handled by their partner carriers.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Interesting answer there Ann.  I *thought* that "ROAMING" covered that? Albeit can get very very expensive. I'm travelling to Costa Rica in Spetember and in looking at their Coverage Map, they do indeed seem to have coverage (partners?) if I wish to pay their extortion fee to use it ($3.95/min !!). But my plan is to turn on AIRPLANE mode and use WiFi when it becomes available at hotels. I just won't be making any phone calls.
