Short style... Broke screen on Droid 1. Got replacment today with 2.1-update1. Called Verizion to see if they could push out a 2.2 update to my phone. Three techs of different levels(I guess when you call you start at dumb **bleep** level) kept tranfering me around and finally called Motorola tech and went through 2 levels of techs and the hooker at Motorola finally said that they (Motorola) do not push out updates.
And before anyone starts in on me...
1. I already went to settings-about phone-system up date. It says my system is updated....(2.1-update1)
2. Powered down and followed the same proceedure.
3. Dropped battery out and in and followed same proceedure.
4. turned Airplane mode on waited one min. and turned Airplane mode off to force system rec. with no luck.
Can I just get a zip file emailed to me and root it that way?
Bryan
P.S. I love my droid 1. Loved it even more when the screen wasn't broke and 2.2 was running.
[Please keep it clean - Thanks!]

..........................AND google is my friend. My question is if this is freely floating around on the net why do the techs at the all knowing verizon not know this?
And {word filter avoidance} is dirty? I could have put *#&!^@* but everybody would still read into it with the real words. I would figure that the mods would put the kabosh on the actual words and not abrevs. Plus when you're as angry as I was when I posted the orig. (After spending 2 + hours and having to call back both verizon and motorola because TECHS don't know how to transfer calls) I count myself lucky I didn't get the whole post [edited] because I needed to vent. Please grow a set and acquire a little thicker skin. And btw I was NOTHING but polite to everyone that I spoke to even after motorola told me to go to hell, they don't push updates. You were not on the phone. You did not hear the outsorced condeming Indian voice on the other end of the line. I do not want a fight and I would like to stay on this forum but please do not try to be the PC police down to the nitty gritty... it just bad form.

Here's how to install the update entirely on your Droid without the use of a computer (OTA):
- A MicroSD Card inserted into your Droid
- An Internet Connection
- And a bar code scanner app ********Bryan added this if it was not already clear*************
1. Install Astro File Manager:
Install Astro File Manager for free from the Android Market if you don’t already have it.
(Scanning this QR code will take you to the Android Market listing for Astro File Manager.)
2. Download the update.zip file to your phone:
Download the update.zip file from one of the following locations directly from the internet to your phone:
Location 1 | My Droid Does [Tested and Verified!]
Location 2 | Dev-Mob [Tested and Verified!]
Location 3 | Nexeo.net [Tested and Verified!]
Location 4 | MegaUpload [Tested and Verified!]
Location 5 | Media Fire [Tested and Verified!]
Location 6 | brandonlong.me [Tested and Verified!]
Location 7 | igacek.com [Tested and Verified!]
Location 8 | strifejester.com [Tested and Verified!]
Location 9 | adkgraphicdesign.com [Tested and Verified!]
(Scanning the QR codes from above will automatically begin the download from its respective location.)
3. Move the update.zip file to the root of your SD card:
To move the update.zip to the root of your SD card, do the following:
- Open Astro File Manager
- Enter the Downloads folder
- Press and hold on the update.zip file
- Select "Edit" and then "Copy"
- Now press the "Astro Up" button once which will take the root directory
- Press the "Astro Edit" button followed by "Paste"
The update.zip file should now be in the root directory.
4. Prepare for the Update:
It is now time to prepare the Droid to perform the update. You will be accessing Recovery Mode to do this. Start by powering down the phone completely.
While holding “X” on the physical keyboard, hold the power button to turn on the phone. You may let go of the power button, but do not let go of X.

After a few seconds, an Exclamation Mark icon will appear. You may now let go of X. To access Recovery Mode from the exclamation mark icon, hold the volume up button and then press the camera button.

5. Perform the Update:
You will then open a text menu with four options. Using the directional pad, navigate to “apply sdcard:update.zip” and push the gold, center button to select it.

The update process will begin immediately and should take no longer than a minute or two. It will let you know when the process is complete.
If you get E:signtature verification failed, you have a bad download. Just download again. The servers are probably getting hammered right now!
You might get this error:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

From here, navigate to “reboot system now” and select it. Your phone will shut off and reboot.
Some users are reporting a longer than usual boot time after installing this, be patient and do not be alarmed, this is normal.
If you're having issues after your first boot, do a battery pull.
6. Congratulations!
Your Droid has now been updated to the official Android 2.2 Froyo release! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns what so ever, please post them to this thread. I will be closely monitoring this thread to provide assistance to those who need it.
ENJOY!

I have 2.2 now, and I wouldn't mind going back to 2.1 at all..
