How do I share my phone's internet connection with my PC?

Officially, you have to sign up for it through Verizon and it will cost you an extra $20-30 (I think) per month.  Unofficially, well, you won't be able to get any tips about that here, and they are really starting to crack down on that sort of stuff.

Verizon does not offer a tethering plan for the Motorola Droid.

Yes, the original Motorola Droid does allow for tethering. It's called Mobile Broadband Connect, the feature can be added when you log into My Verizon and click My Services, then Change Features.  There is a $20/monthly cost for 2 GB allowance of data, 20$ per GB beyond the 2GB allowance.

This must be a change within the past several months. Prior to that, this feature was not available on this phone.

It changed when the motorola droid got 2.2.
