When I am recieving a new txt message my alert tone is not ringing so I am not knowing when I get messages. Also it doesn't show up top in the noifications bar that there is a new message. I do have a customized ring tone and I dont know if that is the issue or not.

You may only have the MMS settings turned on. You want to make sure both MMS and Text settings are turned on. To do so, select Messaging, Menu and Settings.
Scroll to the bottom of the settings and under Priority Settings and change the Notification Sound and Vibrate option.
