I just got a Droid X about a week ago. Prior to that I had a BB Storm. On it I was able to set a specific tone for a single contact on incoming sms/mms messages so I knew it was from that one contact. I cannot find a way to do that on the X. Any help would be appreciated.

But you CAN do it with a third-party app like Handcent or Go messaging and they are so much better than the stock app, anyway. These apps are free at the App Market.

Under stock app follow instructions:
1. Open Contact Information
2. Press left menu button
3. Select Edit
4. Scroll down to Additional Info
5. Click arrow to right of Additional Info words - (more options will show)
6. Scroll lower to Ringtone option
7. Change and save

Sorry I instructed you incorrectly, this only works for custom ringers not sms and mms, Looks like Handcent is your best solution from what I can see because the stock app does not support custom sms and mms alerts.

One thing I neglected to mention is that if/when you use a 3rd-party messaging app, you will need to open the stock app, go into its settings, and disable all notifications. The reason is that BOTH apps will notify you of messages. Once you disable the notifications in the stock app, you'll never know it's there.
Handcent, Chomp SMS, and Go messaging look, or at least used to look, very similar. I was using Handcent, but when I restored my phone recently (because of my own boneheaded-ness), I decided to try Go messaging. Again, they both work very much alike. Really haven't seen any advantage or disadvantage...
I still think Handcent is the one to beat.
