I have tried Handscent SMS and ChompSMS apps bc the default text messaging app wasn't working. I get a black screen when I try to pull up a recv'd text or starting a new one. I can see when I get messages but the app freezes when I switch over. Both apps seem to have positive alebit mixed reviews-some have same issue as I where others rave about each app's usefulness.
Any suggestions for how to get my texting fixed? Thanks!

On some apps I have realized that it will work really well on some phones and other times on other different phones the app has a glitch in it or problem. I have the free game PacMan on my phone with no problems. Other comments report it force closing all the time. It's different for everyone.
My guess for you is there is something wrong with the app.I suggest emailing the developer. Maybe he/she can fix it with an update

do you have a lot of contacts and apps running? I had the same problem with my droid x because of my 4k contacts running I guess in the RAM of my phone I use the app Advanced Task Killer which kills unused programs that hog up the CPU. I merged all my contacts onto Skype and kept the most frequent numbers I call on my phone. I had a black screen when I tried to text or email and if you waited long enough it would come up. I did a reset on my phone and transferred my contacts off my gmail account. If you go into settings -> applications -> running services there you can shut down any services that don't need to be running. Can't for for the Froid 2.2 update can't wait to be able to move items onto the SD card that are not in use. Hope it works for you the fact I couldn't text or email drove me crazy.
Best Regards,
Roger

I dont plan on using even 1% of these contacts so I'll try your suggestion and hopefully, avoid the black screen of Droid Death!
Thanks!

This was happening to me also. Since I went back and did not import my FB ot twitter contacts, I have had no issues in a week, everything I have gathered is that the facebook app is the culprit thus far.

Thanks TGO! I have contacted the Handcent sms developer and we're trying some things to resolve. I'd really like to use the Handcent texting app as it looks to be a very good texting app.

I have noticed people tend to like HandCent SMS the best of all. There is another texting app called ChompSMS in case you are interested in that. I hope the issue does get solved for you...if it does come back & repost with the answer

Check your connection when the issue happenes again, since you are retrieving contacts information from online sources, if data cant be recieved this may cause this issue.
