Touch Screen Issues

I have the original Motorola Droid....and have been very happy with it, except for the last week. The touch screen has become unresponsive at time and will not allow me to access any part of the phone. Or when I touch one app another one starts up or I can set the phone down and it will change screens or the screen will "shake" as if your are moving your finger back and forth. Any help or suggestions? Of course this begins to happen 30 days before I'm eligible for an upgrade.

snortyboy,
Hi there!
I know that can be frustrating. The first thing I can recommend is a soft reset. That's just pull the battery from the phone for 10-15 seconds with the phone being on at the time. After that, pop the battery back in and power it on. If the screen is still misbehaving, you can do a Hard Reset to set the phone back to factory settings and fix the issue. Make sure your personal info is backed up in the Gmail account.
Have a great day!

Dear AdamE_VZW,
If the hard reset does not works, what is your suggestion.
The device touchscreen does not opens at all. I have been a very careful user, with minimal tampering , of the Motorola Droid for 1.5 years and my device still gives me similar problem. I do not install many apps as well. Still the upgrades being pushed by Android market are so many and with touchscreen, we never come to know what is going wrong. The problem we are highlighting here is a pretty soft problem and does not seem like the hardware could have worn out so quickly. I hope the product mangers do enough testing before putting the products on shelves. I have done your recommended steps.
If you could arrange to be more transparent in providing the details of the issue at hand or point us in the correct direction or forum that would be more helpful other than giving a brochure/manual reading.
The questions here is also what does Verizon recommend for issues like these. Providing a contract based service does not ends by just saying if the hard reset does not work then upgrade the phone with a new contract.
Kindly let us know as this is can get problematic with phone not even able to dial 911, when situations might need.
Sincerely
NB
