I'm having the same problem. I just got my new Droid. I can't set it up, because it can't connect to any of the servers.
My old Razr cell phone got at least 3 bars in my house and office, and the Droid is only getting one or none. What is up with that???
I spent 2 hours on & off the phone with tech support just trying to get the thing activated.
My wireless MIFI card gets 4 bars consistently, so I don't think it's the signal; it's the phone.
The coverage maps show that I should be getting good coverage where I am. I'm so frustrated & disappointed!

The DROID Incredible is known to have issues with signal reporting (bars showing). The OTA for Android 2.2 is said to fix this. While seeing bars is comforting, the place to really check your signal is settings -> about phone -> network. I understand the closer that number is to -50 that means you have a good signal. at home mine usually stays at -86 to -93 while showing 0-2 bars. It's frustrating but I've only dropped a call only a handfull of times.
I figrued out my problem. A simple restart solved it.

I have this problem too. Its very frustrating. The problem appears to occur about 20% of the time when WiFi is on, after the WiFi is turned off or leaving a WiFi zone. The mobile network is unavailable, and on the Setting screen, the Mobile Network option is greyed out with the message "Turning on..." that doesn't go away by itself. When the network is unavailable, voice service works but not data service (email, text, web) will connect. The 3G icon on the top bar does not appear.
I have not found any combination of buttons that will turn this on. The only solution is rebooting (*228) or eject the battery. This is not good, since its probably a software problem.
This is a serious problem that I want Verizon to fix.

I'm having the same problem with my Droid Eris. Cannot connect to the Mobile Network. It says it's turning on but never turns on. When I'm away from my Wifi I can't connect to the internet because of this error.
Verizon, please fix this issue, we're paying your company for service which we are NOT recieving. We need a fix immediately.

Do a battery pull, while the device is on. Wait a minute and reinstall and power up your device. Also, call *228 and choose option 1.
See if either suggestion works.

does *228 option 1 reset any other settings? I didn't have this problem until i lost the droid eris i've had for a year & just got a replacement. luckily i had done a backup a few months ago, so i didn't lose everything, but i haven't done a recent backup & don't want to have to start over re-adding apps etc.

I had the same issue with my replacement phone. I read up on all the forums and tried pulling the battery...did not change a thing. I did a hard reset...nothing changed. Reprogrammed with *228 and nothing changed
So after being fed up, I took my phone into a verizon store.
Solution:
The serial number of the phone needs to be updated.
VZW worker did a hard reset. Updated my serial number (which is key!!!!!) and reprogrammed. Now it works just as great as my original htc incredible (no issues...it was stolen).
Hope that helps.

What do you mean "update serial number"?
