Will the Android Apps that are pre-installed automatically update to the latest version, or do I need to download the new version from Market Place?
Thanks

It is all according to how you set the app up.

Thanks for the suggestion
But as the apps were pre-installed on the phone, I didn't set it up.
When I download an app from the "Market: I see there is an option to allow automatic updates.
But under Menu - settings - applications - manage applications - the apps thar were pre-installed don't show up as installed, presunably becuase they were installed as part of the image and not downloaed from the market.
Does anyone knhow how to set the pre-installed apps to automatic update?

What pre-installed app are you hoping to update?
I know the following apps may or may not have an update available on the Market.
Google Maps
Amazon MP3
Visual Voicemail
You can also try searching for the app you want to update in the Market. That's how I find the three I listed above for my phone.

Native applications do not have an option available to allow automatic updating. The only applications that allow automatic updating are (compatible) applications in the marketplace.
To allow automatic updating you would need to do the following:
-Launch the Market
-Select Menu
-Select Downloads
-Select the individual application
-If available, check “Allow automatic updating”

I beg to differ. I just noticed that I have the latest version of Market (200213 or something like that). When I checked Google Maps of which I had previously applied an update, the Market application gave me the option to allow an automatic update of the application.

It does seem that most apps do have the option for "automatic updates" once they have been downloaded and installed, but the question I was really asking was regarding the apps that are pre-installed on the phone - e.g. gmail, maps, facebook - because these apps were pre-installed on the phone, they were never downloaded and do not show up as "downloaded" under Market, so it's not possible to change the settings to automatically download, I'm assuming that the only way to do this would be to manually update the apps by going into Market and downloading the app again (just once) and then setting the apps to automatically update

I have downloaded and manually updated Google Maps for some time now. With this latest version of Market, I do have the option for Maps to automatically update. Street View has been updated similarly and can automatically update.
On the other hand, I have never and will never use Facebook in any form. The application that came pre-installed on my phone does show up in my downloads list as an update is available but it is a manual update. Meaning I have to select it and update it if and when I choose.
I have also seen, but for some reason doesn't show up on the download list, Visual Voice Mail had an update for me to select at my choosing.
I have recently read that there is an update for gmail has been released on the Market in the last few days or week. It is for phones with Android 2.2 and higher. So it looks like as least with my current phone, I will never see it. If you have such a phone, a quick search of the Market should lead you right to it.
