Upgrade to Gingerbread breaks Google sky and other apps

I upgraded to Gingerbread on my Droidx about 6 weeks ago but since then Google Sky, Google street view, SKEye, and SpaceJunk no longer work correctly. Depending on how the phone is held the view on the screen is backwards, or some other strange angle. I spoke with Verizon and Motorola 6 weeks ago, both are aware of the problem, and it is widely publicized on the web. My question is: Does anyone know if there will be a fix for this, if so when? With all the urgency there seems to be to get the next hottest phone out there, I get the feeling the older phones have been forgotten and no one seems to care if a small number of customers are inconvenienced. Do I have any other options besides voiding my warranty and use my boot loader to load Froyo back in?
Thanks!

hello to all. before i post this, i'd like to take a moment to say that nothing that follows is intended to be disrespectful to anyone.
Gingerbread does indeed break the accelerometer and compass for the Droid X, as well as several other devices from other manufacturers. Following is one example of a conversation pertaining to this problem.
https://groups.google.com/group/google-sky-map/browse_thread/thread/416068ce6ea636ae
what is interesting is that most folks (only counting those folks that post on forums that is) do not realize there is any problem at all. If you don't make regular use of the accelerometer, you wouldn't notice it does not function correctly. How would you?
As for the compass, Google Map was updated to make it work. If you really put it through it's paces, you'll notice it does not work in both portrait and landscape modes though. Again, this is not noticed by most folks it would appear from what peeps post.
What all of these folks also don't realize, apparently, is how devastating this bug is to those of us who like having these sensors working. And I am outraged that neither the carrier nor the manufacturer will acknowledge this situation.
Before I get flamed with advice, please be advised: I am handling this issue in the correct manner. I currently have an open ticket with level 3 at Motorola on this issue. As some slight backround, I have had my X for one year now. And I have participated in SOAK testing for both the Froyo and Gingerbread releases (my X shipped with Eclair a year ago).

hmm.. the "upside down" orientation issue of MAPS was fixed in an update that was sent out like maybe a month ago. I would first try to uninstall MAPS, then re-install it. Also, have you tried a re-calibration of your GPS? Might be worth doing as well.

Hi, thanks for your response. I never actually had a problem with MAPS, but it was the streetview in maps, and the other applications that use the orientation of the phone to control the display that was broken, and is still broken. For example, if you go to streetview in google maps there is an option to use "compass mode" where you can see the view of a place as though you were standing there by moving your phone in a given direction. If you hold the phone perfectly horizontal it works, but holding the phone vertical the direction of view is backwards. This same error occurs in google sky, and the other APPS that I mentioned. I did re-calibrate my compass, and I did reload and upgrade all of the APPS that I was having problems with (good suggestions, thank you) and I also re-initialize my phone as well, all to no avail. Anyway, Google, Motorola, and Verizon are all aware of the problem. It just doesn't seem to be a high priority for them to fix. I was hoping someone from Verizon might respond here with some kind of status, especially since they don't provide a downgrade path back to Froyo. Thanks!!

Hi Wildman, thanks for your suggestion. In my second post above however you may have missed that I did remove and reload all the APPs that were not working. I have two DXs with the same problem. Just to verify, I just removed and reloaded those APPs again one of my DroidXs, and there is no change. When you say these APPS work perfectly on Gingerbread.. are you referring to the DroidX, or someother device? Because, they definitely don't work on either of my DroidXs, and they worked prior to the GB update.

I have a Droid X with GB and haven't seen any issues using any Google apps.. Maybe Im missing something, when you say it broke the app what issues are you referencing to? If you are speaking of the compass direction issue this was fixed with the Google Maps update.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. In google maps, when you go to streetview, then in the menu you can enable compass mode where you can hold the phone pointing west for example. You should see a view of the street as though you were standing there facing west. And if you move the phone in various directions you get those views as well. If you hold the phone precisely horizontal you will see the correct view. If you hold the phone vertically the view is reversed (east is west, etc.). The same thing occurs in google sky maps, in other apps that show a view of the world. Space junk for one, and SKEye is another.
I have "factory reset" the phone, reloaded all my apps, calibrated the compass, etc, everything I can think of. I have a couple of compass apps which work correctly, as do a couple of bubble or level apps and my GPS works perfect.
Here is a link from another forum on the subject. If you scroll down there is even a reply from one of the developers of google sky map: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-x-tech-issues/161758-problem-sky-map-2.html
Anyway, the whole reason for coming to this Verizon forum was to try and find out if there will be an update to GB that fixes the problem! I have seen some hints that something is coming, but everytime someone posts a date it comes and goes with no upgrade. And now Verizon employees are on strike.

The weird part is that thread was about the Droid X2 and this was the same exact issue that the had to address with the Droid X after the Gingerbread update but they had resolved this issu with the X months back with the Google update and no one has reported it since, do you have a Droid X or the X2 because I think this is where the confusion is and I wish they would had made a sub directory to seperate the X and the X2 threads.
Just to clear things are you using a Droid X or X2?

Droid X. I never said anything about a 2! What is yours, a DroidX or a DroidX2? And yeah, I find navigating these forums a little confusing!

You're right in regards to Google Sky ... In Landscape Mode, it pans properly maintaining the West/North/East/South direction - scrolling it in the directio I point my phone. When I switch it to Portait mode, the horizon line scrolls backwards of the direction I move. very strange. Definitely broke in GB.

@shredde.. thank you for your post. It is indeed discouraging concerning the lack of response. I've kind of given up waiting. My neighbor recently showed me his new Motorola xoom tablet with Honeycomb (android 3). It has the same problem, at least with google sky and space junk apps.

Dagnabitboy, thanks for bringing this issue to my attention. I understand that this issue would be frustrating. I checked and I saw a similar issue for Google Maps. I submit your issue to our product team so that we can further investigate. Also, there was a recent software update for the Droid X, has this made any improvements to your issue?

Hello Marquia; Yes, I received the upgrade and the problems I was experiencing are now fixed! Thank you to all that were involved in creating the new patch. I understand that software these days is very complex, and there are so many platforms it must run on, so there will always be something that doesn't work correctly after an upgrade. What has been so frustrating is the lack of feedback from Verizon / Motorola about the issue, especially when it was acknowledged that it was indeed a real problem by google themselves months ago. I believe most of your customers understand the complexity of the issues, and not only would it make life easier for your verizon support people, but customers as well, but I think something like a "known issue" page that listed phones and known problems and estimated time-line to a fix would be greatly appreciated by all. You might not lose so many customers to the competition! Thanks, and I'm now enjoying my working Google Sky Map!!
By the way, my user ID now has a "1" added to it.. your forum website went bonkers and told me "dagnabitboy" didn't exist, yet when I tried to re-register it said it was already in use. Oh well.

I'm glad your services are up and running again. FYI, we do have a known issues page on each phone, but keep in mind that we receive multiple calls with different products all day. So if I only hear 1 person having this issue, I will try to troubleshoot that phone on a case-by-case basis. It isn't until we have multiple people having this issue and actually call to report it that we can submit it as a possible product issue.
