With any update you run the risk of losing data. You should always use a backup service, the Backup service on the Droid X will work for saving your contacts. Realistically though, you shouldn't lose anything on an OTA upgrade, but there is always a chance.

Thanks for the quick reply. I did the 2.2 upgrade and all was fine, nothing was lost.

Glad to hear! When updates run smoothly you wont run into problems with your data, however on occasion problems do arise which can only be resolved by wiping all previous data. In all likelihood you should never encounter this problem, but it's always nice to have a backup as insurance just in case the magic technological lottery draws your number.
