VISUAL VOICEMAIL ON DROID? HELP!

Do I always have to press refresh for the message to show up in visual voicemail or should the message always show up as a vm when a message is left without pressing refresh? thanks for any help with this as when I get a message it comes through as a regular vm first then I have to press refresh after pressing the visual voicemail icon on the desktop.

Is this normal?

I use the Verizon Visual Voicemail service/app andI have not had this issue. When I get a voicemail, the phone alerts me and the notification panel has the notification for it. I tap the notification in the panel and it opens the VVM app and my voicemails are already there, I don't have to wait for them to sync.
