Verizon Media Manager won't install - How do I get photos from my phone memory to my PC?

I'm getting frustrated with my new Droid, HTC Incredible. The salesman said I could just plug in the USB and transfer my photos to and from my computer, that the phone would look just like an external hard drive. False...

I plug in the USB and get an option to open the folders or to install drivers. If I chose to open the folders, I see three external drives - one with an autorun.inf file and a few other files. If I click on the other two drives, I get a message telling me to install a disk in the drive.

If I click, "Install Drivers" I am taken to the VerizonWireless website and instructed to install Verizon Media Manager. Okay, so I try to do that, on my Windows 64 bit OS, and get a message that says,

"This Application does not support 64 bit operating systems - operation aborted" (or something like that).

So now what?

I apologize you are having problems connecting your device with your PC.

Try using these steps below:

Windows 7

Click Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Device Manager.

Windows Vista

Click Start > (Settings) Control Panel > (System and Maintenance) > Device Manager.

If prompted, click Continue.

Windows 2000 / XP

Click Start > (Settings) Control Panel > (Performance and Maintenance) > System > Hardware > Device Manager.

The following devices are normally installed:

Anrdoid USB Devices

My HTC

Disk drives

HTC Android Phone USB Device

Modems

HTC Modem (if using as a tethered modem)

Portable Devices

E:/ (Where E represents the assigned drive letter.)

Universal Serial Bus controllers

USB Composite Device

USB Mass Storage Device

If a red X, yellow ! or yellow ? is displayed to the left of a listed device, a conflict is present and the drivers must be updated or reinstalled.

Driver conflicts may also be indicated by a device entry labeled Other Devices or Unknown.

1. If using the HTC DROID Incredible ADR6300 as a Sync device continue to step 3. If using the HTC DROID Incredible ADR6300 as a Modem ensure the device drivers are installed.

2. If VZAccess Manager is installed and a driver conflict is still present, continue to step 3. Right-click the device then click Update Driver Software.

3. If using Windows 2000 / XP, right-click the device then click Update Driver.

The device name may differ from the example shown.

4. Click Browse my computer for driver software.

If using Windows 2000 / XP, select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) then click Next.

Enter C:\Windows\System32\driver into the search window then click Next.

If using Windows 2000 / XP, ensure that Search for the best driver in these locations and Include this location in the search are selected.

5. The driver location can be entered manually or navigated to by clicking Browse.

If the driver software is not found, a Windows Operating System update may be needed.

6. Click Close.

If using Windows 2000 / XP, click Finish.

Once your done, you should be able to see one of the following choices in your My Computer:

Disk drives

HTC Android Phone USB Device

Modems

HTC Modem (if using as a tethered modem)

Portable Devices

You can then sync the device with the PC.

Connect the device to the computer with the USB cable. From the home screen, pull down the window shade (located at the top of the screen).

Touch Disk drive then touch Done.

From File Explorer / Finder on the computer, create a new music folder in Removable Disk (X :smileyhappy:

represents the SD Card installed in the device. This name may vary.

Use the computer to copy pictures into the newly created folder.

From the home screen, pull down the window shade (located at the top of the screen).

Touch Charge only then touch Done.

Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.

I had a similar problem when I hooked my phone to my computer. What I found was that the manager was incompatible with the 32 bit IE when used on a 64 bit Windows 7 computer. I have not tried yet to see if the manager will download on the 64 bit version of IE (though I expect it will as this was the issue when I tried to download Acrobat Reader).

What I did find was that my computer read my phone like another drive. If you are familiar with where you are storing your photos and videos, it is easy to find the drive where they are store as the computer is reading your phone in three drives (one for the operating and related software, one for the internal 8G storage and the third for the microSD card). Once I figured this out, I was able to transfer all my photos and videos easily.

Tether your Droid to your computer. Forget Media Manager, it's useless. However, you should see an USB icon in your notification bar. Pull down the bar and click on the USB icon. You should see four choices. Click on USB Mass Storage, and your computer will see your Droid as another disk. Now you can drag and drop back and forth to your hearts content. Warning, when you are ready to untether, DON'T just pull the plug. Do it the correct way. Clck on the USB icon in the computer tray and click on the USB connection which shows up. Then it will tell you that it is safe to pull the plug.

What I had to do to get my Incredible to show up on my Windows 7 32-bit computer was this:

Settings

Connect to PC

*******UNCHECK "Ask me"

Set Default connection type to "Disk Drive"

Turn phone off

Plug phone into computer

Turn phone on

Took me 45 minutes of searching and finally giving up, and saying "F*** it", and messed around with the settings until I got it to work.

Once I did all that, it worked perfectly. The Verizon Media manager is complete garbage. Kept bitching that my SD card wasn't mounted to my phone, when it was. It also didn't see a **bleep** thing on the phone, either.

Be aware, though, that the first time you do that, it will take a few minutes for everything to settle out. Just let the phone do what it needs for about 5 minutes, then check the top bar on the Incredible, to see if there's anything going on.

The nice thing is that once you do that, you don't need to do it ever again. 2 "AutoPlay" menu's should show up (1 for internal storage, 1 for SD card).

The biggest peeve of mine is that you can't disable the damned Verizon Media Manager popup that happens EVERY time you plug in the Incredible. I'm probably just going to block that specific page, so it doesn't waste my time with that garbage, since the manager is so useless that even a tech geek, or tech incompetent person can't get it to work with the Incredible properly.

The salesman lied. Verizon is here to make your life miserable. They have downloaded software to the phone that hides the "DCIM" directory on the phone card. Now you are completely out of luck; the camera is basically disabled. 8MB photos become tiny when you upload them to FaceBook. I want to stomp on my HTC Incredible now and flush it down the toilet.
