Voice Mail notification icon

The Voice Mail icon on my home page doesn't change at all when I have unheard voice mails. How can I be notifiied when when I have pending voice mails? Does the LED change color? The tiny icon on top of the notifications panel is way too small to see. I've never had a phone that didn't prominently inform you when you had unheard voice mails.

To have the bubble on the Voicemail icon (app) you need to subscribe to Visual Voicemail.

The LED should blink green for about five minutes after receiving the notification of a new voicemail. The icon in the notification line is the only other notification.
