Voice command problems...

On my Droid X, Whenever I activate the voice command using my Motorola H720 bluetooth earpiece it takes 30 seconds to a minute before it asks for my command. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to decrease this delay?

On my old Samsung Sway voice command response was almost instantaneous. This is very frustrating.

The delay can be a bit long sometimes but I have learned that some using a Task Killer but does not exclude the voice command app from the TK and this closes the app and it make the app take longer because it has to open first and then run...  By chance are you using any task killer and if so have you excluded the app, this should shorten the wait time.

I don't use a task killer and the same thing happens to me. Long delays opening voice commands using both the BlueAnt T1 and the Motorola CommandOne.

There are 2 separate Voice command input apps. I find that there is a long delay if using the VOICE COMMANDS app from the apps drawer --  like 20+ secs or so.  However the VOICE SEARCH app responds nearly immediately. So to get around that delay, I have an icon on my app quick launch for VOICE SEARCH and use that one like 95% of the time. It seems to do all the Voice commands that I tend to use. There seems to clearly be a difference between the  apps -- maybe the VOICE SEARCH is Google's and the VOICE COMMANDS is Verizon's ???  Not sure .. but try using the other one for a while. Just drag & drop the APP to your main screen or quick launch  (I use LPP).

Good luck

When I call via my bluetooth the default is voice command. How do I access voice search through the headset?

I don't think that's an option in bluetooth.

PS - I *think* the lag is due to all the underlying/requisite "start up" processes that seem to be needed for  the VOICE COMMANDs app. The reason I say that is it becomes excruciatingly obvious when you launch VOICE COMMANDS from the APPS drawer. It creates a list of all the available VOICE COMMAND optiions -- something that does NOT happen when you click on the VOICE SEARCH app, which thereby comes up very fast. I don't know of a way to override the default VOICE "engine" for Bluetooth.  Anybody else? Wildman?

If there was some way to uncheck all the apps listed under the voice commands shortcuts I think this problem would be solved. Unfortunately, each time I uncheck them and look back they're all rechecked.

Yea, I don't see a way to do that either.  There is a way to "CLEAR DATA" - in the Settings / Applications.  But I'm a bit afraid to try that  in fear I'll screw up the app altogether.

There isnt any way I can think of to change the default voice command app for the bluetooth without being able to modify the buildprop file to disable default, I use Vlingo and I usually trigger it from the from voice command search button.

I have noticd and tried all the same things you are describing using my bluetooth headset - with no luck.

I also installed the leaked version of Gingerbread a couple weeks ago and the problem went away!

When Gingerbread comes out on Friday, perhaps you will get updated and be pleasantly surprised!

Hopefully you will report back here and let us know how it turns out.

Happy SmartPhoning!

Thank you so much for your help, RalphT. It's great to have quick response from voice commands via my bluetooth again. I appreciate the time and effort you spent to make sure I had everything working properly.

any chance the "solution" can be documented in case others have the same issue?  Just a thought.

Oops- my bad; I should have given some detail.

By fortunate coincidence RalphT was using the same bluetooth device (Motorola H720) on his DX as I. He had also previously used that device with another phone, as had I. That made it easier for him to walk me through the process of "disassociating" the bluetooth from my DX, then folllowing the steps to discover, pair and connect the device. As we did that step-by-step over the phone, I frankly don't remember each maneuver but I strongly recommend anyone experiencing the same problem PM RalphT.
