Voicemail Notifications

Someone please help, I can't get any voicemail notifications or email to come through on my notifications and I have to go into my voicemails & emails and do a refresh for them to come through.  They will not come through automatically on my phone.  Instead of having a high tech Droid 2 I feel like I've gone back to the stone age. I've done the updates checked my settings and can't find any help.

• From the home screen, touch the applications tab (located on the bottom of the display).
   
• Touch Email or Text messages. 
  
• Touch the Menu Button.
   
• Touch Email or Text settings. 
  
• Touch Notifications.
   
• Touch Notifications.
  Email notifications are enabled if a green check mark is present. 
  
• Touch Select ringtone. 
  
• Touch the ringtone then touch OK.
  To disable ringtone, ensure Silent is selected. 
  
• Touch Vibrate.
  Vibrate is enabled if a green check mark is present.

That still didn't say how to get voicemail notifications...only email and text
