Maybe you should get a netbook and a pre-paid phone.

Good idea.  A netbook is still a little too large for me to pack it on my person daily.

However, I want a pocket-sized broadband web access tool.  Small footprint, quick surfing, easy to use.

The available plans are listed above. I think you can get an individual plan with 450 talk minutes for $40 plus $30 for unlimited data. If you want texting, you can get 250 for $5 for a total of $75 plus fees and taxes.

Verizon offers data/messaging only plans but it says you need documentation for being deaf or hard of hearing. 54.99 for smartphones http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/splash/messagingplans.jsp

Just what PJNC284 says.

There are some more complicated ideas, but I won't even mention them because someone will call me a smart .. you know what.

Tablets should be available pretty soon.

Hm I am thinking, ever consider the ipod touch?  You can use that to surf the web and even text message. My friend has one & loves it

Might also look at a kindle. Not great for surfing, but handles straight HTML reasonably well.

Thank you everyone for the replies.  Very helpful.  This is a terrific forum.

I'm pretty well bound to using Verizon, the only carrier to supply consistently usable service to my rural home.

The new Android2, with its own hotspot for up to 5 wireless devices ($20/month for this feature) attracts me.  I can only get dialup here and this would probably be better.  I need to try this feature.

I was going to buy Android2 from wirefly but couldn't see how to bring my landline phone number onto it...  The Verizon site has this feature, however.

The new 6x3 Dell tablet/phone/android OS looks good.  If only AT&T service worked at my homestead.

Just remember, while you get unlimited data for your Droid, you only get 2 GB when tethered to your computer. That's not a lot of capacity.
