Weird Droid Issue

So, I bought a Moto Droid last Friday. One of the first things I did was test Pandora using the AUX input in my car. It was a little slow, but sounded fine. Then, I couldn't hear calls when made or recieved. Found out through a search that sometimes the Droid doesn't recognize that the headphone jack is unplugged, so it still sends audio to the headphones even though they are unplugged. Quick battery pull fixed that. The next day (Sat) my wife calls. This was the first call I recieved. I didn't slide the green slider all the way and the screen went blank. The phone continued to vibrate every second or two for about 1-2 minutes and then everything was fine. All has been fine until another weird issue tonight.
I was browsing the web on my home PC and came across a video from AndroidCentral about how to download the legit copy of the 2.1 upgrade and apply it to the phone without having to wait for the OTA update. So I watched the video and then decided to try it. As I go into the droid browser and type "ANDRO" the screen goes blank and my phone re-boots. When the phone comes up, I go to thier page and click the link for the .zip file. It tells me that the file is not compatible with my phone. I think maybe I need an app to download zip files. I search the net and someone mentioned a program called (crutch?) I go to search for that and my virtual keyboard(s) don't work. The letters get big when I put my finger on them, but nothing actually enters into the search box. I try the QWERTY keyboard and that works fine. I type "astro" first because I know I need Astro File Manager (something like that) to be able to apply the update. The app comes up, click "Ok" to download, but nothing happens. No little arrow at the top left, nothing to indicate it's downloading. The virtual keyboards still don't work at this point. About a minute to a minute and a half later, the file is downloaded and the keyboards work again.
Is this phone really that glitchy? I love it, but I don't want to be stuck with it for 20 months before I can upgrade if I am going to constantly experience these glitches. Especially with the "rumors" (we know how those go) that the HTC Incredible is at or on it's way to VZN warehoueses. I guess we'll see how the next 3 weeks go as far as my droid's behaviour and any HTC news.
Anyone experience anything like this with their phone?

I would NOT apply the 2.1 update, were I you... I would look into getting the phone replaced, as it sounds like there is something strange gong on with your phone. The phone is NOT that glitchy...
You could have some bad RAM or processor, battery etc. causing these issues.
