I dropped VZ Navigator when I switch to the Droid X. I need a recommendation for an app that will replace it and hopefully be better.
Thanks
Diana
oh...lol. Nver knew that. Yeah...this nav app doesn't do that. Still an exellent Nav app to say the least.
The DX's onboard nav prgram is exellent! It uses links off of google earth to show pics of your destination and everything. It has detour and trafic overlays, etc...
I have only had the phone a couple of days and haven't had much time to explore it. Could you tell me where I can find the onboard program? Geesh, do I sound like an idiot.
Main center-bottom...app button (triangle with circle around it)...navigation app is a blue arrowhead. Says navigation under it. You can even make a shortcut to your main destinations by long tap-holding the screen and then hitting shortcut, then hitting Directions & Navigation....niiiice.
Agreed - the Google NAVIGATION system is superb ... and you don't get ripped off for $10/mo. for VZN Navigator ...
I actually liked Navigator on my old non-smartphone DARE ... but could not justify the $10/mo. to have it installed. I think VZN should actually INCLUDE that APP on all Smartphones... or at least Sell it for a 1-time APP 'fee' like other apps ... maybe for like $9.99 or something. VZN Nav *does* have some nice features ...
Found it! It doesn't seem to give me many setting options, ie. change to walking over driving. Can i change the voice that gives the directions? Id rather have the "Doid" voice. The street viiew is a great addition.
There really aren't any setting changes that can be made...until you have a desitination plugged in. Not much you can do about the voice either.
By walking over driving...are you looking for a GPS tracker that accounts for your walks? Look for "Runkeeper" in the market. It's free and allows you to record walks, runs, biking...virtually all exercise...through the GPS, with an active map.
The VZN let your mode of transportation. If I was sightseeing I could change the mode to walking and it would give me walking directions to a site rather than driving directions.
Pearl98,
When you say u drpd. vz nav., do u mean u just didn't put it on X because u didn't want to pay the mnly. fee anymore, or because like w/ me, @ store they said it wasn't available for X when I bought it? If it's the later that is not true, as I was chkg. my (1st) bill after getting X & saw I was still be chrgd. for it. I then called cstmr. ser. & was advised it's available for the X on the market, under the verizon tab. The only thing u'll have to do to get it now is do a search there & it will come up. Since the (D2) came out it only shows the (1) for it on the list..
The ver. however is only the (4.7) @ this x. I've called vzw tech several xs to see if it'll be upgraded to (6.0) as I had on my storm (which worked great, as I do a lot of travel up & down the state of Fla., & out of state occasionally too, the only thing that worked right on the "freakin' storm) any x soon, but so far I haven't been able to get an answer to that yet. Also (1) other issue is I've not been able to get an answer on so far is, not being able to get the voice to stream over blutth. w/ vz nav (does work for google).
I know a lot of folk's are going to disagree w/ me but I like the vz nav. (even w/ having to pay an extra fee, which I might add, I don't mine doing so, & I'm sure unlike a lot of others can also still afford to do so, which I can understand in this economy) much better than the google nav.
(1) of the main things I like much better w/ vz nav. is being able to find particular brands of gas sta. along the way & prices immediately. Someone can correct me, which yes, u can find sta w/ google too but, u have to do what amounts to an internet search to find them & prices. Which I find about (90-95 %) of x there are no prices & is not very efficient when traveling. Also, I'm sure someone is going to comment about using layers to put gas sta. on map, however, anyone that's been using it knows this a beta ver. of google & those disappear as soon as you chng page or nav drops.
Which brings me to another issue w/ google I've also had, that a lot of others have had, w/ google nav. dppng. bck to previous screen & still having audio dirct. or comp. shtng down all togthr.. I do still use it around town sometimes, as it does seem to have a couple less steps to input a destination than vz, & also you can ask it to nav. by voice, which wrks pretty good, most of he x. I haven't taken any long trips recently, but google doesn't' seem to drop using it locally, w/ (30-40) min. drvs..
Though, as I've stated, that I use both, I still prefer the vz nav. (& can only hope that vzw will eventually update vz nav. to 6.0 & stghtn. out the voice streaming issue, in which,"only my opinion", already, by far blows google nav. away, unless google finally comes out w/ a much improved final, NOT BETA, version of theirs
Though I can only comment on these (2), as they're the only (1s) I've used, hopefully this help w/ your quest. As it sounds like u've already have used vz nav., try the google, if you haven't already, maybe it's what u're looking for. Like I said, unless they come out w/ the final ver., much improved it won't be long term for me. Especially if vzw does do the update to (6.0).

Gerio, I heard that Garmin companies were in trouble since many people now tend to use their cell phones with GPS on it. I hope the company will some how surive in the feature to come!
I still like google maps. I used Google Maps in San Francisco to get to places. It worked excellent. I am not a fan of the VZW Navigator because mainly there is a fee attached to it.
