What's the difference between "Droid" and "Android"?

The Droid Charge commercial claims that this is VZW's first Droid that does 4G. but the Thunderbolt runs the same exact OS, and did 4G first. What makes it a "Droid"? The obnoxious bootup sound (which I have disabled, BTW :smileyvery-happy: )? I can't think of anything else. Is Samsung TouchWiz "Droid", while HTC Sense is Non Droid? If it is just a marketing gimmick, then at least be consistent, VZW.

All phones running Google's OS are Android, only a select few for Verizon are Droid-branded. Droid is nothing more than a marketing term that Verizon uses for specific phones (Droid 1/2/3, Droid X/X2, Droid Pro, Droid Incredible, Droid Charge). You get the Droid Eye boot animation, droid sounds and the hope that you'll actually get updates with it being a Samsung. The Charge is the first "DROID" to run on Verizon's LTE network while the Thunderbolt was the first phone period. It's been said that the Charge wasn't initially going to be a Droid but it was renamed so they'd have a "Droid" LTE phone since the initial LTE Droid phone (Bionic) was delayed due to redesign.

Marketing. Any phone could be Droid branded, it's just up to verizon. Doesn't necessarily mean it's any better.

PJ! Don't forget the venerable Droid Eris by HTC! Although it never did have the Droid Eye boot animation, it was Droid branded.

Also the Droid Incredible 2.

Made it a little better, and a lot faster. Just bought the "Droid" Charge by Samsung. I am fairly upset. Poor call quality, no moblie hotspot or USB tethering due to some glitch (probably Verizon since I hear the Thunderbolt lost MHS and Tethering as well), battery life sucks if you leave everything on: auto-sync, mobile data, wi-fi, etc. But good battery life if you turn it all off. AMAZING graphics though- the AMOLED screen is beautiful!!!

OH, and no present date for Gingerbread- that blows chunks!!! What's the deal with that? Put two cameras on a phone for presumed video chat and don't update to Gingerbread to use it????? **bleep** Samsung?

Overall a high quality phone if they fix the glitches.

The 32 gig pre-installed SD card helps too. I can put all 4400 songs off my laptop on it and still have 11 gigs to spare!!!

Welcome Dekay,

If you still have issues with call quality, please try removing the case and testing (if you have a case of course), another step would be a master reset on the Charge. Go into Settings>Privacy>Factory Data Reset and follow the steps on the screen.

The mobile hotspot feature will be corrected, as a software update has already begun rolling out for this issue. I use the hotspot on my Thunderbolt and its awesome!

Video chat will work on Froyo in any 4G area. If you are in Flint, MI, as your profile shows, then we do not have 4G set up there yet, but will in the future. Video chat is unrelated to the OS.

Of course, keeping everything enabled on such a data intense device will tend to shorten the battery life. I, personally, am hopeful this gets better with all devices as Google/Android and technology advances.

Otherwise, I'm glad to hear you enjoy the large screen and large memory card! I do too!

"Video chat" is unrelated to the OS, but "Google Talk Video Chat" requires android 2.3.4, which is what they're referring to.
