I see the Verizon Iphone rumor is starting early this year.  I wouldn't wait for that to happen, upgrade to the Droid X if you can..unless of course you plan on going overseas anytime soon.

LTE will begin rollout out later this year, Verizon said.  That will be to test markets, though.  LTE is completely different tech so don't expect the X will be upgradeable via software, or anything.

By the time Verizon gets anything serious in terms of coverage your X will be ready for an update, anyway, most likely.

It's just like the old days of PCs.  You can continue to wait forever if you want the next best thing.

As far as the iPhone goes, I have long believed Q1 2011 for it to hit Verizon, because why else would AT&T be so "generous" with upgrades to the iPhone 4.

PS.  I work in the industry ...

The thing you have to remember with LTE is that it's a gradual increase to speeds, we aren't going to wake up one day and the whole USA coverage go from 1-3mbps download speed to 40+mbps speeds.  Right now VZW has not exceeded the limits of 3G, in the US, T-mobile has the fastest with reports of 2.9mbps on their 3G+ , but even still the theoretical limits of 3G are around 21mbps download speed.   To give you another idea, Sprint's 4G is only pumping out 2.7mbps in tests.  (see here for reference: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/dont_believe_the_hype_sprint_4g_slower_than_t-mobi.php )

So don't think you're jumping onto an already dead ship with the Droid X and it's 3G capabilities, there is still quite a ways for 3G to increase before it's dead.

I dont get the iphone question... what does the iphone do that the droids cant do? The inventor of the cell phone stated himself that android phones are equal if not superior than the iphone... this is coming from the guy who created the first cell phone.. as per cnn.com

Two things that I can think of off the top of my head....

  • Droids can't browse and talk at the same time (unless on wifi). iPhone can do it
  • Droids I don't think have that video conferencing feature yet. iPhone 4 does.

Thats not really an iPhone feature, any GSM device can talk and browse at the same time. The droid does have video conferencing, there are different apps for that. People can see you, you just cant see them, unless you are on a mirror? lol We need a front facing camera droid, Im sure its in the worls.

Mirror :smileyvery-happy:  I read something about video conferencing on the iPhone that just came to my mind. It was like in order for you to see the person they would have to have this special app on their device.

the video conferencing is not really that, its INTERNET CONFERENCING.  without access to an lan you cant do it

it will not conference over the phone line, at least not that ive seen.

so how does that work for people places that they would normally be aple to do the same thing with a web cam?

it doesnt

Well, it works on Wifi, not a wired LAN.  Lots of places like Starbucks etc have free wifi, and so you could do conferencing with your iPhone (to another iPhone user) there without a laptop with a webcam.    Is there a tremendous need to video conf in Starbucks?   No, but I am sure it will take off anyway.  (In the "early" days of cell phones, people would call "Guess where I am calling from...", now people will make their first video conferences on the phone.)

well in most rural areas, where vzw is king, there is no wifi, att should make it clear on thier commercial.

a) that's because it's CDMA.

b) That's because of no fwd facing camera.  Other Android phones can do it (like EVO 4G)

The iPhone can also disconnect a call when you touch the lower left hand side.

It also does not allow you to install Anything Apple does not deem worthy, including the app from a Pulitzer Prize Winning Cartoonist

Famously, because of ATT (forgetting the antenna problem), it's been said the most necessary accessory for an iPhone is not a case but another cell phone (pref. Verizon)

Yes, I read that CNN story.  The iPhone can do this: get a bunch of fanboys to disregard any defects.

I work in the industry, and prefer Android over iPhone.  I have used both extensively.

And the opinion of the guy who created the first cell phone is especially important in this area because.....?
