Why doesn't the Droid 2 Global work on AT&T?

While I have no desire to actually use my Droid 2 Global on AT&T, I do intend to use it with foreign SIM cards when I travel abroad, and I would like to be certain that they will work. So I'm curious what is preventing the Droid 2 Global from working on AT&T, just in case that same issue would prevent me from using foreign SIM cards as well.
AT&T uses the 850/1900 MHz bands for GSM; the D2G supports 850/900/1800/1900.
AT&T uses the 850/1900 MHz bands for 3G (UMTS); the D2G supports 850/1900/2100.
Also, I have successfully unlocked the SIM using an unlock code I received from Verizon Global Support.
Anyone have an idea what the problem could be? There are several others as well who have mentioned this problem on various boards:

Since most GSM cellular networks outside the US use 900/1800/2100 Mhz bands, my guess is that even though it's "unlocked" there are restrictions to prevent you from using the 850/1900MHz band that TMobile USA and ATT use.

That's what I would suspect as well, which if true is pretty slimy of VZW/Motorola since both their sites advertise the phone as Quadband GSM and Triband UMTS. It's false advertising essentially.

Are you trying to use your Droid 2 Global on the AT&T network while it is still active on the Verizon CDMA network? I believe this would be the cause of your problem, a network conflict with CDMA winning out.

No, the device has a menu to switch between Global, CDMA, and GSM modes.

Looks like this will require a radio firmware reflash to unrestrict the 850/1900 GSM/UMTS bands according to firebrain at xdadevelopers.
It has been done for WinMo phones so hopefully someone will be able to develop an Android solution as well.
